1993 upgrades for towing
Hello all!! I am a new member of the site but not a new reader. I have a 1993 Gen 1 with a 5 speed with 136k on it that has a banks exhaust a fuel sumpand gauges.
I have read just about every forum on performance in this site but I am really looking for some direction. My truck lives its life pulling something heavy and I am really not sure where is the most bang for my buck doing upgrades to add power. I would love more power but also like to have somewhat good fuel economy and try to lower the EGT. I also want it to stay reliable and not have to mess with it too much. The truck is a rock and has never let me down and hope to keep it that way.
Any suggestions i would greatly appreciate.
Thanks
Rob

Do a grind on the fuel pin and while your there put in the 366 governor spring and give the fuel screw a few turns. These are by far the cheapest and the spring by itself will make it feel like a diffrent truck. just read the sticky and watch the u tube video. Also make sure u hang on tight to the little black pin, spring and washer. It's a really simple upgrade and makes a HUGE difference then as the checkbook permits ( or the wife ) diffrent turbo then some injectors but the fuel pin, spring. and givin it some fuel will keep u happy for awhile and you can do it for around $25

Thanks for the input. Does anybody recommend a fuel pin, I do not feel comfortable grinding it myself. Again I am looking for a reliable towing machine that gets somewhat good MPG.

Do a search on here or 1st gen for some pictures but all your really doing is tahing more off of the pin and making the cut a little deeper and a steeper angle if you want. You can grind them amazingly thin and cant really do anything wrong. Use an air cut off tool plug it right into the wall or the compressor so you have better control and take it slow so you dont get it to hot. Take advantage of all the free stuff you can.

3200 spring was the best investment I've made, and it was cheap to do.
After turning in the power screw one turn, my truck runs amazing. Not going any further till I get my pyro gauge, but drives like a different truck.

with the mods in my sig. I can get to 1200deg pulling a steep hill empty so thats probably enough for a truck that pulls heavy. At least until you can rig up twins. The power is easy but the heat is hard to keep down.

The HE351CW may not be the best for towing. It only has a 9cm exhaust housing which might not be the best for EGT's. I am trying to set my truck up like the OP described. I am still trying to do research on the best turbo. Right now I can hit 1350* on flat ground with no load.
As for the 3200 RPM spring, I was being really cheap and lazy and just backed the full throttle screw out. I then moved the throttle stud to the same hole that the return springs are hooked in and replaced one of the return springs with a little lighter spring. The effort required to push the pedal and the amount of travel the pedal has is about the same as before.
The 3" brakes made a little bit of difference for stopping too.

How much do you tow and what gears do you have. Depending on the answers to those questions adding more power might just shorten the trans life.
That said 3200 spring is a big difference in a 5 speed. That's a pretty low buck upgrade. Turning screws is free. After that how much do you want to spend.

The truck is 4X4 I think it has 373 gears. The truck is always loaded either pulling my boat which is about 7k or my excavator with trailer runs about 12k. The EGT's climb really fast on even a slight hill. It has never let me down just
slow and always watching the temp.
Transmission was rebuilt about 1000 miles ago.
I will be doing the 3200 spring and a little turn on the fuel screw for sure. With 133K on the original injectors should I replace with them an mild upgrade?
Thanks in advance all of this is very helpful.

Lift pump. I'll agree with the 351 charger, they cool well at higher pressures, and you get true 4" exhaust. If money isn't an issue then there are better options then the 351. 190 injectors, and some AFC tuning, just turn the stock pin.
