1993 4x4 with tranny issue

I recently purchased a 1993 dodge 4x4 1 ton, cummins 5 speed. After putting a starter on it, I drove it and love the power it puts out. Previous owner said it had some work done to it improving the performance. I gave 2500.00 for it and it has 160k miles on it. The body has a couple small dents and no rust.

I originally bought the truck to do a cummins swap into my 1973 crew cab shortbed 4x4 that i am building. I am thinking about just driving this through the winter though.

It has an issue though. When I shift from 3rd to 4th, the shifter sometimes falls to the bench seat and the truck stays in 3rd. I was made aware of this by the previous owner, but it didnt stop my buying it obviously. The tranny doesnt make any noises while driving it around, just when you shift from 3rd to 4th, the shifter goes to lala land.

I was told that this might be a common thing for these getrag trannys, but I havent been able to find any info on this.

Has anyone else had this go on, and what was the fix? what should I look for. I am not a newbie to mechanicing or fabricating, but this is my first diesel and getrag 5 speed. Any help will be most appreciated.

Also I was told it has 3.08 gears in the 60 front and 70 rear. I dont recall them ever having those. Did they come out with them factory? I am trying to find out this info to determine whether or not i strip it down or drive it.

3.07 did come from factory in non-intercooled auto trucks. They may have been swapped in.

I believe there is talk of some 5spd. 3.07's.

The shifting problem sounds like it is probay in the shifter cover. If you pull out the shift handle, I bet the front ear is broke off the 3-4 shift lug. There is a writeup in the sticky about the shift cover.

i did not see a sticky message. This truck is all factory, 12 valve cummins, intercooled. I was hesitating pulling the cover off the diffs to verify, it cruised nicely in 3rd on the way home (about 7 miles)

can you post a link to that sticky, meanwhile ill continue looking for it

I overlooked the '93 part earlier, I don't think you will find the high gears in that new of a truck. I was thinking non-intercooled.

It looks like the pic is dead in the sticky. Basically any pickup 4 or 5 speed shifter works about the same. There will be 3 lugs down in the top cover. There are spring pins that hold the shifter centered, so it is in the 3-4 lug. These pins are what gives the "spring" going over to the 1-2 or 5-R lug. More than likely the corner is broke off the center one, allowing the shifter to leave 3rd, while the trans stays in gear.

I looked at that sticky and have experience with other manual trannys, I'll pull the shifter and then possibly the whole top and go from there.

This truck has very few dents and no rust, so I'd like to drive it for a bit
