1990+1996 Dodge Cummins 4x4
Hey guys i own a mint 1990 D250 gasoline auto single cab 4x2. I also own a wrecked 1996 2500 5.9l cummins 4x4 auto with only 140,000 on it. I pulled the motor and have it going to the machine shop for cleaning and checking.
Basically i want to make the 1990 a diesel and 4x4 with what i have. Any advice on current builds on this site i havent seen since i just joined will help or advice yall have to give please let me know. im low on $ so using the parts i have and fabricating other things is the way i wanna go.
ill be posting pics later dont have them on this computer.
thanks

Unless it's untaxed, then it's red.

Welcome to DTR.
You certainly have your work cut out for you! Are the cab configurations the same? You will need switch over most of the parts from the 96 including but not limited to:
The entire front axle with suspension. This will take some modifications to the 90's frame for new perches for the wider leafs of the 96. Since you will be bringing the trans, transfer case and engine over you might as well bring the rear end as well.
Basically if the frame on the 96 is ok it'll be easier to just put the body from the 90 on it and call it a day.
If he 96 is an auto you will be ahead of of the game with a lock up converter , most of us auto guys wish we had that.
Lots of helpful people here good luck.

with 140k I wouldn't bother tearing the engine down! A 96 is coil spring front suspension, lots of fab to adapt that to the 90 frame.
As mentioned if the 96 frame is straight it would be easier to put the 90 cab on the 96 frame.

the frame on the 96 is bent on the front right corner its an extended cab long bed and the 90 is single long bed so i would have to shorten the frame on the 96. either way im thinking lots of work.

I would stay coilover you will have a way smother ride then the leaf sprung first gen.
There's a CC conversion here where a guy put the front diff and coilovers on the old frame.

I did a coil spring conversion to my 1992 4x2 cummins .. It was alot of work .. And it isn't quite as nice as the other guys lol. But I did a custom lift on mine .. It riders pretty smoth also .. But it is defenatly a learn by doing experience .. I've changed it around a few times and I'm shure it'll be more but it's turning out nice for not having over 3000 onto my truck with buying it
