1st Gen. Ram - All TopicsDiscussion for all Dodge Rams prior to 1994. This includes engine, drivetrain and non-drivetrain discussions. Anything prior to 1994 should go in here.
Just in time for these cool, dark mornings - a build thread! Thank you sir, for going to the trouble of documenting and posting for our viewing pleasure! An extra treat since it will be a working truck and no, um, barbie...
If you need to free up some space for this new vehicle, I'll be happy to house your fire wagon here for you...
Maybe you'll inspire me to finally do something with my old '76 crew cab W200!
The "Barbie" comments are from the Chrysler show at Carlisle, if you didn't know....
If you don't mind storing my FireWagon, that would be great. It may come with some hay equipment that needs a house for the winter.
The engine is low mileage, but probably high hours from a tow truck. So it got a full re-seal, the head was cut 0.012" to true it up, and the pump got a full tear down and hot rod parts at Allegheny Diesel.

Yea, that truck made me throw up a little in my mouth when I saw the pictures...
Hmmm, I could probably make room in my barn for the hay equipment too - but if I went to that much effort you should probably just leave them here through next fall at least!
Did you get it fired up on the shop floor like I did on my 215HP P-pumped 12V motor I was putting together last winter?
I figured I wanted to see it running before burying it in a Ramcharger engine bay. Glad I did too as it would not fire up...We found a stuck plunger in the P-7100 pump was the culprit. Would have been less fun to sort that out while leaning over a fender.
Keep posting stuff up, I am sure several people are following along and just not commenting.
Look forward to following along...I've been wanting to do the cummins conversion on Sno-ball for at least 7 years now but never seem to find the time to start it. And now with my Son in-law wanting to build his 1st gen I guess it will continue to get bumped.

The engine is back together and still on the stand. Once the frame gets back from the sandblaster I plan to set the engine and transmission in and then fire it before setting the cab down.
I took the head to the machine shop and he took about 0.012" off to make it true. I don't plan on crazy high manifold pressure so I didn't fire ring it.
I set the head back on and finally decided to go with ARP head studs. And I figured since it's going in an '85 Dodge, that I'll go with the period correct Cummins Beige. I'm not a huge fan of spray paint in a can, and I'm interested to see how this holds up after a couple heat cycles.
The front D60 and transfer case are out of a '91.5 donor that I bought for the engine and the rear D80 is out of a '94 that I also picked up for a donor
A good friend runs a sandblasting and painting business and he cleaned up these parts for me. I applied a coat of black epoxy primer. Once every thing is rebuilt and assembled it will get a second coat of primer and a few top coats.
