1980 Dodge diesel
Its been a long time since I have had a Cummings and need some tips. I am a Powerstroker by nature but still like the 5.9. I am looking at buying a 1980 dodge with the 5.9. It has not been ran or on the road for about 4 years. It does start but will not go past idle with out choking out. I have not looked to far into it. The asking price is 800.00 If yall have any starting points for trouble shooting I am all ears.

So far all the information I am getting is from the second hand. I am going to go look at it Thurs. Was 90 the first year for the turbo D? If so it is a 90. What came in the 89 and below or were they all gas? I have 1 dodge now its a 77 3/4 ton gas. and have had a 02 3500 flat bed. I am not that good at Cummings Diesel history yet.

Was 89 the first year for a diesel in a Dodge? If not what diesel were they using before the 5.9? I am just gathering information before I take a look at it so I know what I am looking at and how hard of a fix it might need.

Now that my mind is clearing I belive it is a 90 grey black grey with stacks. If it is the 5.9 it wont come out of idle. What should I look at first to get a feel for the problem and the cost to fix? My second hand informant did say it had a turbo.

Wont come out of idle? Do you mean there's no pedal there? Because if that's the case then it's likely in need of a linkage at the pump. If the pedal does rebound after you put it down(the pedal comes back up on it's own) then it's likely an internal pump problem. Just pop the hood and look at the injection pump on the side of the engine. There's a level thats there. Push it towards the front of the truck. It should rev it up.

i'd have to agree with timb... sitting that long stuff will start growing in the tank, run it and it'll just suck it right into the filter and clog it up, (right?) filters are pretty cheap i'd bring one along if that's the problem even if there's crud in the tank it should let you run it for a bit. and like timb also said, pull the 3 wingnuts off the airbox and make sure nothing made a nest in there, you sure don't want to suck that into the turbo.
