16cm Housing = Higher or Lower EGT's?

I've been searching here and reading a lot of info about housings. Some say the 16cm housing on a 1st Gen. will reduce EGT's due to increased boost. Others say the smaller the housing the more restriction, which results in increased EGT's.

My rig will mainly be used for towing a relatively light load (~5-6k but lots of mountains and very hot temps) and I would like to increase power without having to worry about EGT's too much. I understand the power incease isn't very significant when moving to the 16cm housing, but I am more concerned about low EGT's while towing after my pump tweaks are done.

So, my question is, will a 16cm housing (replacing my 18.5cm) lower or increase my EGT's while towing in hot weather? Is a 16cm housing pretty much the perfect size for our trucks when used for towing?

On your '93 auto you won't notice much EGT difference between the 18.5 and the 16 cm. The stock torque converter won't pull the RPM's down to the point where the 16 cm will help much. I wouldn't bother spending the money. The 16 will drop EGT a little bit, though. If you want to try a different housing get a used 12 cm wastegated housing. That will drop EGT across the board until you start throwing a lot of fuel at it.

Thanks Wanna. I thought I read that the 12cm is too restrictive for towing with pump tweaks and it actually raises EGT's?

Basically, I plan to throw some fuel at it with the upcoming pump tweaks and just want it to have decent power with nice cool EGT's. I'm not looking for the sick power some of you guys are putting down, just around 250hp (although 300hp would be nicer if the EGT's weren't an issue while towing ) Is this a realistic goal for these 1st Gen. CTD's and will a 16cm housing be neccessary to get there?

For towing, I think a 12cm and tuning for about 250 RWHP (approx 500-550 RWTQ) will make you all and there's no reason the 12cm won't support that power level. The engine will live a very long and happy life at that power level, with the only weak link being the tranny...which should still put up with those numbers reasonably well. Of course you're going to want more, but applying big HP/TQ numbers in a towing scenario gets very expensive, no way around it.

On an intercooled truck with stock injectors the 12 cm flows plenty. Port it a little and cross drill it so it wastegates all 6 cylinders. With that housing, some pump tweaks including a 3200 RPM spring, and a tighter converter it'll be a nice tow rig that will surprise quite a few things at a traffic light.
