16 Cm housing
After doing a lot of reading on the forum it seems like changing out my 21cm housing for a 16 will help with the one thing that I do not like about my truck, turbo lag. My turbo seems to be in good shape as far as endplay etc. so I don't think a complete new turbo is needed. Besides spooling faster are there any other things that will be effected either good or bad ie fuel milage, boost, egt? My IP was rebuilt to factory specs about 2 years ago and the truck is all stock. The thing I really like is that my fuel milage has never dropped below 14mpg even with a 28 foot stock trailer and 12 head of horses and have seen 25mpg pretty regular under good conditions. The milage is more important to me than getting over the next hill faster, I don't mind using the gears. I have never seen the boost go over 14psi while pulling a hill loaded and the rpm's right on the govenor. I have also not seen the EGT over 1050 pre turbo. Thanks for any input. Kevin

Yes, the fuel screw (Full power), lower the star screw inside the pump "less spring tension" (more fuel) and shave the pin "even more fuel... 16 housing on your turbo and you'll be, why didn't I do this a long time ago?

I would like to go with a 16 too. Have you found a good place to get one?

Piers was the least expensive I found I believe it was $165 and HTT was $195 just going with my poor memory so don't hold me to it. I have seen them on ebay from time to time too but I'll probably just get a new one.

This has been kicked around many times with many different opinions and opinionated outcomes. By dropping the size of the housing from a 21cfm to a 16cfm you also lose the amount of air flowing or the available amount of air that can flow while boosting. Yes the lag is diminished, boost comes up quicker and so do egts. The 16cfm and the 18cfm do not have a waste gate and the seat of the pants dyno says about the same. A good all around alternative would probably be an 18cfm to keep the egt's down when your towing those heavy loads. The boost will still come up quicker than a 21cfm and a lot of people here have removed them and you can usually find them in the classifieds for about $20-35.
Just a side note: If your nailin it and watchin the boost climb, the fuel mileage will probably drop. Here in Washington State, diesel is about $3.80 per gallon, give or take a dime. Just something to think about.

EGT's towing will be fine with a 16cm housing and the little fuel over stock he will be running. I bought my 12cm wg for $70 and love it. It is awesome for towing and gets the load moving without rolling smoke till boost comes in. My highest towing EGT's are around 950-1000* on a hill and 700* on flat ground. Under full throttle in 5th I hit 1150* till I get over 100mph then it climbs to 1400* for some reason.

I drive like an old lady rolling into the throttle. the only time I have it to the floor is on extended hills when I'm running out of gears. Fuel milage is VERY important to me also, our fuel is about the same $$$ as yours. I like to see my boost really low except whe it's needed. Thanks for the input, it's been a while sense I've driven an 18 and to be honest I don't remember if they had a lot less lag than mt 21. Kevin
