Talking 14 cm wastegated housing on!

The rain held off just long enough. Swapping the housings was too stinkin' easy - I unbolted the housing and lifted the turbo out! It's nice to work on new stuff. Then putting it back together was fun. Had to do a little grinding on the wastegate actuator mounting stud and nut that was closest to the compressor, I don't think Holset expected a compressor that size to be mated with that housing. It's got the actuator that runs directly underneath the turbo like a 24 valve, not the one that sticks out the side like a 12 valve. Couldn't get it on the truck the way it had been clocked, I ended up bolting on the drain line and loosening the compressor and turbine housings so it could clock itself. More fun was had lining up the exhaust by myself, but it all went together.

Test drive report: Spoolup was quicker by a little, but I've got so much fuel down low that the 16 was spooling fine. The wastegate is keeping the boost right at 30 psi with or without water/meth. That's a big improvement over the 12 cm, with the water/meth I could overwhelm the wastegate. 30 psi doesn't seem to be quite enough to keep things cool without the water/meth, I'm going to make an air bleed to get it up around 35-38 psi. HTT said to try to keep it under 40 psi.

BTW, I ported and drilled this housing like the 12 cm in my gallery.

Gov. spring and grinding the AFC lever is tomorrow.

Good deal! Sounds like a success

Did you really think it was going to happen without a fight? What fun is it if you can't verbally abuse the parts before finishing the job

I think the 14 is going to work out fine. Today even with the added fuel and RPM from the pump mods, the water/meth kept things around 1100 degrees. I just got in from making the air bleed but haven't tested it. I'd like to see temps of 1200 max without the water/meth so my truck is not totally addicted to drugs.

The governor spring install and grinding on the lever went well. Well, except for me cutting too deep on my AFC lever. Many thanks to Steamdave for selling me the top off his junk VE, that was a real lifesaver. I did it right the second time. Dave and I had both trucks buttoned up and test driven by 12:30. Those things sound really mean above 3000 RPM! My truck makes crazy smoke on the bottom end if you mash it, but it still cleans up nicely. A little bit of gray when the wastegate opens, but the air bleed should solve that. BTW, the star wheel is as high as it can go and still engage on the ratchet spring. Smoke screw is flush.

You guys who did the governor spring alone, my hat's off to you. I don't know how you could juggle the pliers, the pump top, the top hat & spring, and the governor spring. I don't have that many hands.

What RPM can you get to before it plains off now and is it strong up there?

With my stock spring I guess it's around 2500-2600. Are you seeing greater than 3000?

*As a side note, I got the OD to kick in today WOT at around 62 instead off having to lift when the truck defueled at 70. The TPS voltage was way up there at around 3.90-4.0 at WOT. I backed it down to 3.25 at WOT. viola!

It keeps on pullin' to 3200. I've only had it over 3000 a couple times, it's a big adjustment to my driving style to wind 'er up that tight.

I let my brother drive it to Pep Boys to get brake pads for my sister-in-law's car. He says I can stop adding power now. He fogged a couple people real bad on accident, you gotta be really gentle below 1500 RPM.

Sounds great! Got tell your brother he's got to mat it till the boost comes up and back off so he's not smokin out the intersections

Stop adding power!? Did you

In an auto it would be crazy with the boost never falling off

Well, I think the cheap stuff is done now. To add any more power would mean shelling out some serious cash for custom EDM injectors and/or one of those high capacity custom distributor heads for the VE - or p-pumping it. I can't really afford more power right now.

If you need some tig welding done to rebuild a portion on that other lever, let me know. But being a gas delivery driver..I think you might know somebody closer

That's SteamDave's problem - I gave him my old pump top as a "core".

Yes, managing the spring alone, in the cold dark garage was very....trying.

And, oh, yes does it sound evil at 3k I thought my factory spring was pulling till 2400 or so...well, the motor was still getting fuel, yes, but not pulling like it does now. I hear you about the driving style change, Dave.
