12 Valve vs. 24 Valve

Hey guys, I am working on a project for my AG Diesel Engine Systems class here in Wisconsin. Do any of you know of any good articles that compare the 12 valve and 24 valve Cummins engines? We are supposed to look into their setups and determine which is better (more effiecient and such).

Thanks,

Matt

And my son who's on his third IP on his 99 is jealous about my 93 that'll burn almost anything that can get through the filter.

His spanks mine, though, but I don't dare turn it up much because the better half has a bum left leg and needs the auto.

I have had both, worked the 24v hard enough to turn the paint black on a tripple disc converter with no problems.

however i feel like when i leave home in my 93 i know i will be driving back in the driveway at the end of the day, and not sitting on the side of the road with electrical problems.

I looked at the 24 Valve VP44 trucks a while back and read countless nightmare stories from owners regarding the VP44 pumps. Nothing against the 24 valve motor itself, just the VP44 pumps.

VP44 was horrible if you find a truck with 200,000 or higher it will have likely gone through atleast one and most of them have been chipped making it worse if you put a p pump on a 24 valve they are great unless you got a 53 block :O

yep the 12 valves have the kdp and the 24 valves and a few 12 valves have the bad 53 block. The VP44 is a notorious issue if you don't keep it well fed with fuel. 24 valves will get more air of course but yes there is more parts in there and more to wear out. They are nice trucks/motors though. I've always liked the 24 valves and am actually looking at getting one now. I've also had a few ideas on a VE 24 valve, and from what i've researched I don't see why it wouldn't work. The question is it worth doing? it would at least be different and I like that part.

SOP meter in my experience....12 valve would out accelerate the 24 valve until about 45 mph. Once the 24 valve got going, it was all over for the 12 valve. I also agree with above member, I always had problems with the electrical system, and the 12 valve was always more reliable.
