*Cleanable* Bhaf part number
#16
So I just got the AFE filter in the mail. Same as the ones they put on the ASA intake system. The guy at PDR told me that filter has more surface area and flows better than a stock filter. False. It has less surface area. The diameter is probably about the same as a stock filter, and it is somewhere between 2/3 and 1/2 the length. It also tapers smaller towards the far end. I am not impressed, and will probably send it back. Is there something special about this filter? What is the advantage of a $220 air intake system that has a smaller air filter than the stock one? Anyone have a part number or a direction for me to look for a better filter? Thanks.

eeesh, that sucks man. From what I've been reading in the 2nd gen forums and stuff, our stock air filter is actually considered a BHAF to them! Maybe the fellow that sent it thought he was working with the "first" cummins from 94? Therefore thought it was bigger than stock.

That's my take on it, but I don't know the actual flow rates. There must be something on that somewhere, but all the filter manufacturers seem a bit cagey about releasing hard data. They all just seem to point the finger at everyone else saying my filter is better than yours, but not proving it.

Randy,
I am running the ASA setup with the aFe pro 5R filter on it I believe the part number is 24-40506. It seems to be doing well. Got a little better mileage. I don't know how much bigger we can go in the old spot for the filter but if you want a little bigger one their new Pro 7 comes with a 4" inlet and bigger sizes. check out these:
73-40011
72-90055
72-90009
They are a little longer and a little bigger around. I was looking yesterday (that's how I have the part numbers) to maybe pick up an extra to carry in the truck and rotate with the Pro 5R. Just a little info.

Just keep the oil as light as possible. A fine mist of oil coating the intercooler ruins the heat transfer capability. I quit running a K&N after I got a look at the inside of my intercooler.

Ok, so I cancelled my order on the stock replacement Pro 5 filter from AFE because they were backordered, but they sent it anyway. The same day I ordered an AFE filter from PDR that goes on an ASA Modified's intake system. A quick glance tells you that the stock replacement filter is WAY bigger. The largest diameter of the smaller filter is about the same as the stock replacement filter, if not slightly larger.
This is where the rubber meets the road: There is about 5/8" of fold on the smaller filter, but about 1 1/4" on the larger filter. However there are 49 Ribs on the bigger filter, and 58 on the smaller filter. I am still thinking the larger filter wins.(The measurement looks wrong in the pic because "0" on the ruler is about 1/8" from the end.)
Why would they put this little dinky thing on an ASA intake system?
Larger Filter: Stock Replacement Pro 5R AFE Part #10-10031
Was $88.30 Shipped from ASA
Smaller Filter: ASA Replacement Pro 5r AFE Part #24-90008
Was $64.00 Shipped from PDR
So far the stock replacement is the biggest *cleanable* filter that I can find. It's going on tomorrow. It also has a better seal than the K&N does. The part that goes against the plate is kindof a soft rubbery plastic that seems much better than the foam on a K&N, or any filter that I have run for that matter.

Yes BHAF is much bigger than the AFE drop in. I hope PDR takes the little filter back and refunds my money. They told me that it has more surface area and will flow better than a stock filter. Not sure if this is true or not. If they don't refund my $15 shipping and I have to pay to ship it back to them I might just keep it. I might be able to put it on my dad's 3rd gen, or run two air filters in my first gen....
