So is the sp500 kit every thing you need, besides the barring tool?

Yes and no, it depends on how you are going to verify TDC. If you are going to pull the injector and measure from the top of the head you will need another dial indicator and an extension for it.

I'm about to get mine timed. I was going to set it at 15.5 for my set-up. Should I go a little higher?

That sounds like it would be good for your setup.

Shoot for 16, minimum. Still get a good strong bottom end, from 1500 up.

You also can make a barring tool with an old starter gear welded on a socket.. for cheap mind..

So how do I do this? Also is the barring tool to turn it over? Could we turn it over with the harmonic ballencer bolt?

thanks

There are 4 balancer bolts, not one in the center like a gasser. I would just get the barring tool.

you can use the alternator to turn the engine over, but it will end up making you very angry, because when setting the timing you move move back and forth quite a bit, and using the alternator nut only allows you to turn the engine backwards, it can be done, but you will end up buying a barring tool the next time.

by the way, after doing mine, and setting it to 16 degrees, it really smoothed out the idle and all throughout the power range. it seemed i gained a little power on the low end, but this is because it had dropped to eight degrees . after 2000 rpms, look out, huge power difference, more of a cackle sound now. by the way, make sure you are at tdc, if you're not using the timing pin method. i spent 2 hours timing mine on saturday, put everything back together, and tried starting nothing. after 4-5 minutes of cranking, saw fuel coming out of exhaust, doh, timed on the exhaust cycle, took it back apart, and redid it. kind of a dumb mistake, but lesson learned. if anyone close to jacksonville, nc needs their truck timed, i would gladly help out.

Mike's in Northwood, ND timed my truck, doing a before and after dyno to see the results, from 310hp at 12.5-13* to 325hp at 16.5*, the power band did move to a slightly higher rpm range.

15 HP for timing?? That is cool. What was your setup when you did that?

At that time it was banks plate and banks 14cm2 wg housing along with 3k gsk 4'' exhaust and BHAF style K&N. Looking at the dyno paper the peak torque was about 200 rpm's higher the rest of the torque band was relativly close, peak hp was at the same rpm's after timing bumb. But thats partly from goofy banks plate. Tim.
