Exclamation Worst sound I have ever heard outta my Cummins, Input shaft???

So I am driving like normal, like hell, and getting on the freeway here in Des Moines Iowa. I see a honda or something coming up on me so like normal I laugh and flip my tcc switch and pull away. Unlike normal when I hit 70 or so I heard this loud horrible bang. I coasted off the next exit and pray I chucked the driveshaft. My heart skipped a beat when everything was intact underneath the truck. Park will still engage and the truck will still start like normal. 2 or 4 wheel drive makes no difference. I have a horrible feeling that I snapped the input shaft. Every gear freewheels and it leaks no fluid that I can seeand makes no noise, its permanently in neutral. I know that something like this was going to happen with the things I have done and the way I drive so I can only blame myself, BUT it is still depressing. With everything I know and have read on this site I beleive I am going to go the Goerend route. I want the best money can buy. I want to do it right the first time, and then move on to other performance upgrades. I stopped where I was because of my stock trans. I have the 47RE I think. Would you guys reccomend just upgrading to a 48RE, or have any other opinions about this deal? ....in the mean time I am stuck in a 83 Ford LTD, so help me god.

Yes deffintly sounds like a snapped input shaft, or you turned the splines in the drum.

Check the Transfer case when you pull it, I thought the same thing with my NV4500, but when I pulled the T-case I had torn all the teeth off the splines, I'm not saying the tranny isn't the culprit, I'm just saying check the Tcase, it could save you a lot of trouble.

Yeah I wont rule out anything yet, I am just going to have to tear into it. What would you guys think about the 48RE instead of the 47RE? either way I see alot more happening to my pickup in the future....where should I go from here? I think I have about a 0 plate all the way forward. Stock HX35 turbo and exhaust until my stacks and when it locked up it would GO, but hot for obvious reasons. I just never thought past this point because of my ridiculous slush box.

Hehe,
Mmm, slushbox. If you end up needing any help after this weekend I can probably lend a hand. I'm in Pella . . .

I don't know much about the differences between a 47 and a 48, but I'd like to have an auto . . . hard to drag race with a stick.

I vote for a bad input. You said that park still works right? That means that the t-case is holding to the output of the tranny. The park pawl is on the output shaft . . .

Good luck,
phill

^^^ What he said, if the park still works then its in the trans, if not, its probably in the t-case, but don't rule either out.

A 48re is a lot stronger than a 47RE, but your controls are all different, you'd need a standalone computer to make it work, not cheap.

If your going to go that far, might as well look at an AISIN (If its even possible in a 2nd gen) or of course the Allison, either is stronger than a 47RE. You might also look into a medium duty trans out of a Freightliner or something along those lines. But a 47RE that is built right will hold a lot of power.

OK, I am going to Goerends tomorrow to pickup my billet tranny and tc, I am very excited to drive it, I think it will feel like a new truck. The old trans on the other hand....It spun the input shaft inside the front drum. Ripped all the teath off the input shaft. Cracked the front drum. Made one good mess in there. I will let you all know how she drives when I get it in, but I know it will be nothing but great!

Thumbs up

GOT IT IN MONDAY. If I would have known what a difference this would make I would have done it the very first day I bought the truck. It is amazing!
