I'm looking at buying a 97 5 speed 4x4 and I really dont like curved shifter. I was wondering if the 98 and up straight style would work on and older truck?

Yes it will, but you have to buy the whole top cover for the transmission and swap it over.

The base's are different on the 97 and later trans and the 98 and newer trans.

I have a swapped top cover and shifter on my 97 and love it! No more reaching across the cab for 5th gear!

Top cover cost me $165 shipped for a used one from a TDR member......he had one more I'll see if I can dig up his name again.

I bought my shifter kit from Quad4x4.com for $85 shipped.

WELL worth the $$$ in my opinion!

Now if I could just sell my original cover & shifter to help pay some more of this DD clutch off!

mark, can you get a picture up sometime? what about the boot, did you use the original one or put in the newer plastic housing and rubber boot in with the new shifter?

I don't have any pics. I forgot my digi cam the weekend we did it. I went to Dodgeman01's in Ohio to install that and my SBC Dual Disk & input shaft. Tried taking pics with my phone cam but they were too dark.

I still have the shifter coming up through the factory 97 boot and its not completely sealed around the shifter arm because it so much thinner and lets in some outside noise even though the other plastic cover beneath it is intact. I've thought about calling Quad and seeing if they would trade me for a Chevy shifter arm like Dodgeman01 has on his truck because the arm is wider and seals up at the boot.
