WIF light on after working on engine??
I had the truck in the garage for about a week doing some maintanence and mods. When I got the truck back together the WIF light was on. I checked the electrical connection and drained some fuel out and didnt see any water droplets. I had played with the injector pump so the filter did get bumped around some. The fuel came from a local station that I use with no previous problems and has been in the tank for a 100 miles. I figure that it is coincidence and the sensor is having a hissy fit but I dumped a full container of power service in the tank this morning. Needless to say the light is making me a little nervous. What do ya'll think?

Does the light go off if you unplug the WIF sensor?
If not the problem lies in the the wiring or computer.
If it goes off the problem could be as simple as a piece of debris bridging between the sensor prongs at the bottom of the filter.

I disconnected the harness and the light went out. So I dropped the sensor and there was a little floater in there about the size of a nickel. Coffe colored and limber like water and oil mixed. The filter looked good otherwise so I cleaned everything up and reinstalled it with the old filter. Low and behold the WIF is still on. I also checked the fuel heater housing. The screen was caked up with debris so I installed a new screen that only took the local cummins dealer 3 trips to locate when I gave them the part number The truck runs great and starts right up so I think the sensor is bad. What do you think?

Hard to imagine anything that could fail on the sensor itself, all it is is two prongs.
My only suggestion would be to clean the heck out of it. You could check it with a ohm meter before reinstalling, it should read infinite (open).
The entire bottom of the filter w/ WIF is availible from the dealer for around $25 if it comes to it.

Thanks, I just dont want to damage the motor. Other than that one glob I am not seeing anything that resembles moisture. With that said I am tempted to run it for a little longer and see what happens. It does have the entire bottle of power service in there that is supposed to absorb water. Maybe drop the sensor and filter again in a few days and see what comes out. Do you think I am playing with fire doing this?

The contacts looked clean so I just wiped it down real good with a clean rag. I guess next time I pull it I will take some electrical contact cleaner to it.

Take the sensor and blow into it with compressed air, right where the wires enter the sensor. I find when I shampoo an engine, that's right where water gets in and keeps the light on.
