white smoke
hey
i been seeing some white smoke since i replaced my fuel shutoff solenoid and relay,.. its just been more than normal and i just wanted to know what you guys think it might be?
i see the smoke on start up and even when its warm and step on the go pedal ( in neutral ) it'll put out white smoke
i was thinking that my timing slipped, im also checking for air leaks
thanks
Bruce
any input is great

i've been calling around to see how much to get my timing done, one place qouted me $500 to do my timing, one place told me that my timing didnt matter and try to sell me a chip for my truck i told him it was a 12valve and he said they have them for the 12v too.. i was like cool guess i'll putting in a edge programmer in my truck

yeah it always baffles me about these shops that know nothing about diesels and try to sell you things that wont even work. Try a Cummins shop the have been reasonable with me but havent done timing to give you prices.

Hey, stop by my place, I'll sell you a chip for your 12 Valve truck.
I have them available in:
1) Plain.
2) Nacho Cheese
3) Sour Cream
and
4) BBQ flavered.
My truck smokes white in two conditions:
Cold and full throttle in Nuetral or Park.
I think your on the right track by checking your timing and for air leaks.

From what you are saying you are not suffering from over fueling like a failed injector, that would be black smoke or heavy smoke, higher egt's and or lower MPG. The symptoms you have described, no load high rpm white smoke and deceration smoke/ cold smoke are trade marks of a timing issue.
Also does it have any miss mild or more around 2400-2500rpm when you free rev it?
My 12 valve did the same thing, the gear slipped back to 8* timing i bumped it back up to 15* No problems all identical characteristics to what you are describing were gone. Timing should cost you right at $100 +/- 20 depending on who you find. Find a good shop that is into bombing and spinning wrenches not just bolting on parts they will be willing to advance the timing beyond factory specs.
You can check you boots but an air leak would be entirely different symptoms.
Good Luck

mine had a smooth rpm curve and then when it reached about 2200-2500 actually it was in the 2400-2500 neighborhood and held it there for a few seconds the motor would develop an irregular pound a stagard firing. you can feel it mainly

Mine has blue-white smoke when it's cold, and has a rough sound around 2,000rpm, but it smooths out once it's warmed up. Once waremed up, i only have the black-brown-sooty smoke, cause whoever tuned it up went psycho on the star wheel.
My truck has tons of power, so I was wondering if my timing had slipped too, or do I have something else going on? I've yet to notice a rough feel from the engine while running at 2,000 - 2400 rpm down the highway. I just bought the truck, so I may have to pay close attention to notice it.
You guys think mine needs retimed too? It fires right up every morning so far, so I'm thinking that it's just cause it's cold.
