I never heard of anyone using seafoam in a diesel.

what do you mean it takes a while to run on all cylinders?

It would start at 0 with a touch of the key. That truck had 210k miles, motor never been opened up. Less timing equals better starting.

Make sure the compression is good and that the motor is fresh, and check your fuel system.
I've noticed the same. Truck started much better with stock timing (don't remember the number) in cold temps. With advanced timing it really does not want to run without either block heater or Espar after temps hit about 0° It is even worse with ULSD. EPA not only lowered the sulfur, but also the cetane which you need for cold starts.

BTW, forced aspitation engines do not burn oil as a rule. There is no vacuum to suck oil past the rings or valve stem seals.

Everyone seems to be eliminating a fuel problem, but a couple years ago my truck had the same symptoms.. plugged in, started fine; cold out and not plugged in it wouldn't start w/out ether and then would smoke and stumble like crazy. After reading this forum, decided I better replace the fuel lines from tank to engine. That cured all my cold start problems and smoke/haze on start-ups.. Good luck

That was my thought too. I'd have a good look at the fuel return hose at the back of the engine.

All fuel hoses were replaced from the tank to the engine and back about 1 1/2 years ago using diesel rated hose.

normal fuel pressure is 17-22 @ idle, and 25-30 @ 2500 rpm according to my dodge factory service manual

I have never heard of ANY problems with seafoam and rubber parts.

regarding burning oil, well, it burns blue smoke almost all the time

regarding not running on all cylinders, well, it stumbles and misfires, sometimes even popping thru the exhaust

I highly suspect the oil burning is from to much blow by. This truck has a recycling blow off system on it, the blowby is routed back to the intake

hard start

you have a intake heater issue. probably your solenoids. Just fixed my 12 valve. did the same things. checked the grid, it was good. even had the voltage drop on the gauge and the wait to stat light on the dash working correctly. My 12 er has 425,000 miles on, leaks a little fuel, and smokes when its cold. I kind of doubt the engine is worn out. My truck has never had the head off, or even had the p7100 apart. as a matter of fact, I finally just changed the valve cover gaskets.

Check the solenoids. Cummins motors are amazing when it comes to durability

I dunno, neither of mine need grid heaters to fire way past 20 degrees.
