sure 12v cummins will go 500k miles... but what about rest of the truck?
what I'm getting at is ... there is no substitute for low miles!
HUGE difference between putting 200k miles on your 12v
vs buying a 200k miles 12v cummins truck
you know how that truck has been maintained.
my 96 12v had 67k miles when I found it.... best truck I've ever had!
besides doing the KDP a few hours after getting my 96 12v... all I've done is front brake pads and a fuel filter ...
now got 79k miles with zero problems.
talked to a former dodge dealership mechanic (purchased all his factory cummins tools).. he claimed 96 12v was the best year. after he prepped the 96 cummins... he never saw it again.
not so with 97 and 98... those trucks came back to dealership for attention.

fair question... I've had a 97 12v 4x4 auto before my 96 12v 4x4 5sp
way MORE problems with my 97 12v... power steering pump constantly going out, taking brakes with it... replaced brake master cylinder, replaced water pump, pressure relief valve issues, replaced lift pump, replaced injectors but that doesn't count due to heavy oil burnt.
of course KDP and other maintenance like changing to synthetics in tranny, belts, also replaced vacuum actuator for 4x4 on front axle.
purchased 97 12v with 97k miles and never stopped working on it (sold it at 127k miles).... vs 96 12v after KDP ... have only done front pads and change out fuel filter.
night and day difference on maintenance between 96 12v and 97 12v

I was looking at one & had it to the shop that had done a couple of inspections for me when a guy came in complaining about poor mpg, & a week later his truck was for sale, I asked the shop mgr what was wrong & he told me that the guy just can't keep his foot still. BTW the truck gets about 19 mpg solo & 12 towing for me.
