What transfer case do I need?

So when I bought my 1995 dodge 2500 the previous owner had put a used transfer case in but it was leaking. I assumed they just did a bad job with the silicone job where it meets the tranny. Well my shop said they put the wrong transfer case on that's why it's leaking. So my shop is going to hopefully make it work but the question is how do I determine what transfer case to get if I wanna swap since I don't have the old one for the id tag?? Thanks for the help!

Crawl under and see what the tag says, should be a np241dld or np241dhd.

There's a seal on the transfer case that stays tight to the input shaft, and a seal on the transmission that also seals to the input of the transfer when it's plugged in. Maybe there's a 231 in there, but I'm not sure in the input shaft differences or if it would even bolt up. I'm almost positive the output shafts are different.

See what you have before you price out a new t-case, might just need some seals.

I would ask your shop how they determined the transfer case is incorrect? The truck could have been ordered when new with 1 of 2 options as was stated above. Both of which will bolt on to the rear of your trans.

They told me something about the shaft is too short to slide far enough into the transfer case to make a good seal. They already put new seals in and it still leaks where the transmission and tcase meet. They are going to try to seal up the weep hole and use some RTV to make it seal because they said that's the best they can do because the tcase is incorrect for the tranny.
