Hello all. Everything I have read so far about the dreaded KDP has left me with a sick feeling in my stomach and now this! The Cummins bulletin provided by Pappyman states the the gear housing casting in engines produced after '98 have taken care of the problem. Is it true that there have not been any problems in trucks newer than '98? I seem to recall reading that anything pre-'2001 is vulnerable. Is my '99 out of the woods, or should I start feeling sick again?

The jig I pass around in the NW has done over 300 fixes, only two pins were out so far as the jig wouldn't work, both were '97s. On the tdr poll most of the failures were '97. Your chances of it coming out are way better than winning the lottery. Better fix it one way or another.

bigfish, I have personally seen one failure in a '99. Dave Smith in Idaho who did the repair under warranty said they have had a few '99s come in with damage. Cummins changed the cover design in '98 but didn't use up the old style until '99. Better take care of it.

If I owned a 99 and down I would get it secured, I have helped several tab theirs, and I will stand by what I tell guys, that if you can do simple maintanance on your truck as the oil, fuel changes, brakes, you can do the tab method, it is really simple and the jig is even more simpler, the cummins dealers around here charge anywhere from$300 and up, dodge is worse. My 94 lacked maybe a 1/4 to 1/16 from falling at less than 90k miles and I mean babied miles. Goodluck and hope no one's falls, it is sickening to know how easy it is to keep it from doing it. Tst and Piers sells kits and instructions, and or I will email you the info with all the part numbers if you like. Rick

Thanks Infidel and Kandgo. I guess it's back to worrying about it. I think I will give Harold at rvhvnfun@juno.com a request for his jig kit and get it done. I am sure there are a few ctd owners in my neck of the woods that could use it too. The price isn't that bad and I could always work for beer to help others with it
Anybody in the interior of B.C. need this done too?

Going with Harold's jig is good deal. I used to send a free loaner jig into BC and the shipping was more than Harold's jig costs.
I still get requests at times and could direct them to you if you'd like.

I don't know too many people with these engines, but I do personally know of 2 that have gone. That's good enough for me. I'm planning on doing it very soon. I just need to get the time and parts together. BTW, my local Cummins dealer/distributor claimed to not know anything about it when asked. I'm glad the tech bulletin was posted.

Visual evidence

Is there any way for me to tell of the KDP has been fixed on a truck by just looking at it??? I am looking at a few '96-'98's and I want to now if the HDP has been fixed. Any clues???

You can look and see if it has been secured by the jig method,if it was tabbed there is no way to tell for sure. Rick,,

If you find one with J-B Weld on the timing case, you don't need to worry about the KDP anymore.

Well, I just did my KDP today. And, guess what? It had backed out about 1/16". I took a punch and hammer and tapped it back in. It when back in real easy, so that tells me it was still coming out when I got to it. A big thank you to this forum!!!!
