what determines 12v hp ratings 160-215?

I found a good deal on a 95 160hp 12v, but was wondering if there was a difference in the engines besides pump adjustments. It is from an automatic truck which I assume is why it is rated lower. Someone else told me the 160hp engines dont have the piston oilers like the 215hp? Would there be any reason not to buy a 160hp engine if you planned on making the necessary mods to increase output?

I thought the short blocks were the same and the diff. being in the pump. That i know there are 160,175,180 and 215 hp versions. Some have diff. delivery valves and i think the cams in them are diff. hints why the mm is diff. between them when you see timing specs.. dont be scared of a 160hp engine i heard some guys say they can build more from them anyways.... dont know if thats true though.

You can get more HP easily out of a 215 pump, but the short blocks are the same, only difference I've ever seen is the oil injectors on some are plastic tipped, others are steel (Mining engine so it may be different than the highway engines). I've heard guys claim you can make more out of a 160 pump, but I've never seen one that can keep up with a built 215 pump, not saying it isn't possible, but personally I haven't seen one to prove it.

As far as I know the injectors are diffent along with the injection pump, The 215 pumps will give you the most fuel without being took off the truck and put on a bench. Ive heard you can get the most fuel from a 215, 180, 160 pumps I guess its just who you talk to. I think as long as its a p7100 pump you can get alot of fuel out of it. Id love to have a 215 pump just because a fuel plate in it alone and you can put 350+hp to the ground.

Yes injectors are different too, figured that was obvious. With a plate and injectors in a 215 pump your at or over 400HP, and already needing a bigger turbo.

It doesn't much matter. With a set of injectors a GSK and a plate (maybe DV's) you can put more fuel out than your EGT can handle unless you are going to be racing and building twins etc.

I agree 100%. Its not to hard to add more fuel than you can manage temp. wise. Start consevitive and work your way up.

It is a P7100 pump. Are the 160 and 215 pumps the same, just have different "tunes"? If I modify the pump will it put out the same as a 215 or will I always be putting out less fuel regardless of the adjustments? I do plan on injectors, so thats not an issue.
Thanks for the help!

With just a #10 plate in a 180 pump, you'll be putting out about 220 hp.

They are not the same the 215 pumps have bigger dv's and a more agressive pump cam and they have a notch in the top of the plunger to advance the timing I'm sure there are more differences but these are what I know of.

My motorhome has pump #884 and appears to be a 160hp pump - the engine is rated at 230hp. When I filed down the bump out off of the plate, It looks like a 160 hp plate. Can anyone can figure why it is rated at 230hp?

Because the motor is in backwards! Duh.....

Sorry, I had to. No idea why the higher rating, unless they do other stuff for the M/H motors. Does it have the emission stuff on it?
