water in fuel sensor source?

Hey guys, I went to change my fuel filter the other day and everything went fine, even got the truck started. It ran great for a few minutes, then I went to tighten the head of the lift pump because it looked like it was leaking and the truck died and will not start again. I suspect either the lift pump sucking air or the water in fuel sender sucking air. Where do I buy one of these senders that screw into the bottom of the filter? All the shops around here look at me like I am crazy when I ask for it. I got a new lift pump from napa, but I was also thinking about replaceing the fuel heater while I was in there, where do I get one of these? Are these two dealer only parts? Also, what size 12 point wrench do I need to get my starter off? My hands are all busted up from messing with the fuel system, and I think it would be much easier to do the work with the starter off. Thanks Teddie

i tried to get a new fuel heater unit from cummins for my '97 but apparently it is no longer available. you can get a pre-filter assembly, but hard to say if it will stop your leak. also, it is for sure easier to work on your lp, etc with the starter off, was for me anyway, and the starter comes off easy. can't remember for certain, but i think it's a 12mm, but you'd better double check. if you're running on veg, you may just want to eliminate the whole stock assembly and go with something better suited to veg. i believe there are people on this post who have done that. i think you can just bolt a plate over the hole where the lp would have gone.

You can get a WIF sensor here
http://www.genosgarage.com/CoastalDa...ID=364&CATID=1

All the parts for the fuel heater are available separately. Here are the Cummins parts numbers:
heater element upper quad ring 3834185-s
heater strainer kit 3845400-s
heater element 3907766-s
cable harness 3843722-s

I went through the same thing once. I was about 150 miles from home on a Sunday and my sender was dumping more fuel that the engine could possibly burn. I ended using an oil filter (Fram PH 3985) to get me home and then to the dealer to get a new sender the next day.
Here is the thread that I posted at the time.

Jim, the fuel heaters are the same on all 12 valves.
Some people have told me the above part numbers are old and don't work, others say no problem. Guess it all depends on the ability of the guy behind the parts counter.

Get the starter off, huge difference. A 10mm 12point wrench will do the job. Try to clean the bolt heads if possible, otherwise the wrench is hard to get on,and if not completely on, it will slip.
I got a new H2O sender from Cummins, around 30$. Part# 3831852-S
If you are unfortunate enough to have to remove the LP, replace the bolts with studs, makes installation MUCH easier.

You can make a water in fuel sensor for about 5 to 10 dollars. It will be solid brass and you will never need to worry about breaking it again. If interested, let me know and I will tell you how. Nothing fancy about it, no special tools needed. Just a drill, a common brass fitting, and some jb weld.

The sensor for the 96 will not work for the 97.

A replacement fuel heater is still available from cummins, but it is slightly different part. You need to install the new style part UPSIDE DOWN from what the instructions state.

Sorry I am at work and in a hurry, if you do a search under my user name, I have had both of these problems and have posted what I did to resolve them.

Actually here is one of them: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ighlight=kd460

I'll see if I can find the info on the WIF sensor. KD
