valve seals

I am doing my valve springs and figured I would throw seals in it also.

I got the new seals from my cummins dealer and they tell me that the intake and exhaust are the same seal part numbers?

the ones on the truck are different..the intake are orange and say 28 on the top and the exhaust are black and say 30 on the top.

I had them double check today and they called another cummins dealer who said the same thing...that they are serviced with the same part.

Has anyone done this lately?

I recall all the seals being the same when my head was serviced.

Is your head modifed to accept the new style seals?

The valve guide casting needs a bit of machining for the retainer style seals. The shop that serviced my head made a cutter for his head shop machine.
They charged $100 for new exhaust guides, machining for stem seals, valve job & planing. (I have to brag about that bill.)

the old seals look perfect...I just figured I would replace them since they had some miles on them, but I was shocked to see how well they held up.

It's been awhile since I replaced my head gasket, but the seals that came with the kit worked fine with no mods. They have stayed put for about 450k.

I had forgot, so I just went out and looked. Intakes are orange/red and the exhausts are black. I would think that no mods to the head should be needed, but I would sure call Cummins to make sure, or is that a Cummins set? It has a lot more gaskets than the kit I bought had. After market could be different.
