valve cover gasket
11. Inspect the rubber o-rings on the bolts and replace any o-rings that are cracked or damaged. The valve cover gaskets are usually OK and may be reused many times. If any are damaged, be sure to replace then with the black gaskets, not the gray gaskets that appear similar. Install the valve covers and tighten the capscrews to 18 ft-lb (24 Nm)..

this is from valve adjustment article.
the local dealer gave me the gray gaskets.where do i get the black ones ??? or can i use the gray ones
97 club cab

thank
brent

Re:valve cover gasket
I got a set at NAPA for about $22-$23 . The O rings included.
I also picked up a set from Cummins and after the O rings were added they were about $27-$28.
Both sets were grey. I like them better. I've used both and the grey lasted longer.

: Eddie : 8)

Use the gray gaskets. Cummins has done away with the black gaskets. They had a tendancy to become brittle and hard from the heat and not seal properly. I have found that the gray gaskets seal MUCH better than the black and can be used over more times than the black.
