Angry Vacuum Pump Blowing Oil

1996 Diesel, blowing oil between vacuum pump and adapter to power steering pump, getting worse!
I plan to fix it myself, can anyone provide assistance as to what parts or unusual tools may be needed. Is there a seal or o-ring that will fix this or do I need to replace the pump.

The O-ring part numbers can be found in our Tech Facts section:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

This is a common leak on our trucks. Mine is leaking as well.

Thanks DieselDaze,
Has anyone experienced unusual problems with replacing the O-ring? Any tricks I should know before starting?

Sorry dkeason,
Like I said, my truck is leaking as well. I'll be just as interested in hearing an answer to this as you are.

Rich.

It's a pretty straight forward repair. You will lose most of your PS fluid, good time to switch to Valvoline Syn-Power or another semi synthetic or synthetic fluid. Be care when you put the vacuum and PS pumps back together that the splines are lined up. Quite a few folks haven't had them lined up right and forcing the pumps back together with the bolts can break the splines.

I think mine may be leaking as well. I thought maybe my leaking was coming from the timing gear cover and crankshaft seal. When I did the kdp fix it took care of most of the leaking but a little may be coming from the area you mention. IT isnt too bad so I am just going to leave it till it gets worse.

I definately recommend removing the powersteering pump and vacuum pump as a unit. It's easier to line them up on the bench than under the truck and thus save the seal you just replaced.

I think the only way to do it is to remove both pumps as a unit.
Otherwise the bolt holding the pumps together next to block is near impossible to get at.

You don't have to remove both pumps. If you're careful you can line up the pumps without damaging the seal, just take your time. The seal might be leaking, not just the o ring. Make sure you get a seal that is made of Viton material. The nitrile material in the other seals is only good for about 200 degrees you can get help finding them here.

Here are the instructions that I used.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

The o-ring listed in the tech facts was not on my pump. I think the ones on mine were:

seal coupler I.D 45mm X 2.5mm silicone

pump halves I.D 73mm X 1.5mm
