Vacume pump oil leak ...
Hi guys
Today was the first day after doing a lot of repairs on my new to me Dodge ...
I did the new viton seal in the vacume pump ...IT's Still leaking ...I know why .
The power steering pump did have nice little grove in it similar to the one you get on the crank shaft ... but they make a sleave for that ..I don't think they make one for this aplacation .
Looks like I'm buying a new power steering pump .
Anyone else have this problem ...?
Thanks
Greg

Re: seal...
I just came up with my own fix ...maybe ... The seal is set in a fixed point in the housing , but if I make 4 thin washers that I can put in between the vacume pump and the power steering pump , that would put the seal on a new area of the power steering shaft ...
Sounds good ...I'll see how much a new pump is tomarrow ... it's really not about the money ... thats just a real pain in the but ... especialy after i did such a nice job the first time ...LOL
Later guys

That was going to be my suggestion, move the seal in a little further, there seems to be enough room.
BTW was it leaking for a long time before you fixed it?

Re:Seal
It was leaking ever since I got the truck ... a month ... I figured it was leaking for awhile by the looks of it .
In side the vacume pump it self The seal had to go right where it gose flush with the housing .
But as i was saying just space the pump ever so slitely , I think moving it back 1/16 would do it ... but the vacume pump has to have the bolts remover in order to rotate both units in order to seperate them ...and there real pain to line everything up again.
So if you take some large 3/8 fender washers and cut a nice 3/8 goove so you can just loose the power steering pump and slide the washers in between the 2 pumps it might just work and it may be enough to provide a new area for the seal to ride .
I will give my own advice a try tomarrow .

Ah. I was talking about taking it apart and not putting the seal all the way down. There should be enough room but you might want to shim the seal. There is a member on the site that puts 2 seals back to back to prevent leaks so there is enough room to do it this way. The only problem I can see with your idea is that the dogs won't contact the drive star fully. Not sure if that's going to be a problem or not.
