turbo / injector options

A friend of mine bought a 2003 Ford F250 Crew Cab with a 12V conversion in it and asked me to do a few things on it for him. The motor was completely gone thru, has twin turbos, different manifold, adjustable fuel plate, Air dog system and large injectors in it. I am still waiting on the paperwork to know what else was done on it. The issues are he uses it on the farm to pull trailers and such and the pyro temp works like a boost gauge it is so easy to have it up to 1300 DegF that it is really not usable and this is with nothing hooked up to it and it leaves behind a large cloud of smoke.

He would like to eliminate the high EGR temps and a lot of the smoke but still have good power when we are done. If I pull an injector is there a way to tell what they are, my guess is something a really large tip? What are my injector options here?

Also what are our options on turbos? The twins are okay if you have the RPMs up but for bottom end there isn't much there till you get them spinning, they would work great for a truck puller, but not in our application.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I doubt you will need to pull a injector on your buddies engine....it most likely wouldn't give you any useful info anyways, as the internals/nozzle could be modified or aftermarket.

Your best bet is to tune the afc so that he has only a very small amount of smoke (just a whisper) at take off/low boost fuelling. The inj pump is set up too aggressive on low/no boost fuel and spool-up suffers and egg's get out of hand, because of too much fuel at no/low boost. Have him/you adjust star wheel to apply a lot more spring tension (turn star wheel towards drivers fender) and find the happy medium of the afc housing position (forward or backwards) as this also sets how much travel the governor arm is allowed under no/low boost fuelling.

Plate position doesn't matter for spool-up and generally doesn't come into contact with the governor arm until around 17-20psi if set up correctly on a heavily fuelled inj pump. It's all about afc housing position and spring/star wheel tension tuning for the general farm use that your buddy needs.

Thanks for the feedback on this hadn't thought about the afc housing position. We just need to get the power to be usable. He is still thinking he wants to go with a single turbo to clean up the engine compartment and get a faster spool, have to see how it does after some afc adjustment.

I had to adjust the smoke screw 5-6 turns before I started to see any improvement does that sound reasonable? It smokes alot less, but still not as well as I would like to see, it also boosts or pulls harder sooner, but still lagging in my mind. One thing I thought odd was that previously the max boost I ever saw on the guage was 42 PSI, now I see low 60 PSI no problem, how would adjusting the pre boost screw affect my overall boost, I thought it was just affecting bottom end 5 - 10 PSI.

At what RPM should I expect my boost to really kick in?

What are my options on the starwheel spring, I see TST has a kit, but think I need something stronger then that based on mods to motor.
