Turbo downpipe

How does the downpipe attach to the turbo?
At the moment the downpipe just sits inside the turbo outlet. It's a major exhaust leak and was wonding if there's supposed to be a V-band holding to 2 together?

Yes there should be a V-band clamp.

The V-band clamps online say they are for a cast elbow from turbo to downpipe.
I dont have a cast elbow coming off my turbo. It's just regular exhaust tubing with a heat shield on the back side of the downpipe.
Will any 3" V-band clamp work for me?

Can you take a picture and attach it to your thread? Sounds like you have the wrong turbo exit for the down pipe. The outlet of the turbo bolts on and you can install the correct outlet.

Here are a couple pics.
The downpipe covered in soot is necked down and slips into the silver pipe.
I can just pull the downpipe out of the silver pipe cause nothing is holding it in place.

Looks like something someone rigged up over the years.

The down pipe should have a lip on it that bumps up to a cast lip on the back of your turbo. The V-band then binds the two together.

Great! I hate it when people Jerry rig things.
If your going to fix something, do it right the first time!
Looks like I might as well replace the whole exhaust system. Gotta add that to my list of
to do's this spring/summer.

That's a 1st gen turbo. The turbine housing has a built-in flat flange or should have. You need to take that sleeve off and see what is there. If you are lucky, both flanges will be intact and all you will need is the V band. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of my stock setup. Here is a generic picture of the housing showing the flange:

Hopefully he figured it out a few months ago.

I hate these old threads that automatically come up when you scroll too far down the page.
