Truck temps - is this normal?
OK, I put in a new T-stat in November, and it usually will climb to 190 then cycle down to 140 and back up to 190 repeat.
Recently in the hot weather, the temp of my truck will do the cycle in the AM while the truck is warming up - then it won't cycle anymore, usually hangs a ille above the middle of 140 and 190 - does that have something to do with the heat outside?
Do our fans stay engaged when its really hot out?
Even on the freeway in 90 degree weather like today, the temps never got past say 170?
Only cycles when it first warms up.

When its 80* + it lingers slightly above the middle of 140 and 190...

Sounds totally normal.
Our fans spin all the time but don't lock up and use any engine power until about 200°.
When the fan clutch finally does lock up you definitely know it, even with the stereo full blast.
The fan sounds like a 747 taking off and grabs 23hp!
In the 13 years I've owned my '95s I've only heard the fan lock up a handful of times. Mostly when you'd expect it, towing hills in 100° weather and forgetting to remove the winter front when it's 80°.

As stated above, this is normal. It is warm enough outside that the thermostat doesn't cycle(or at least doesn't do it much), it just stays open and the coolant temp is regulated by the fan clutch. Since it is so hot out, the coolant in the radiator doesn't have much time or temperature difference to help it cool down before reentering the engine so even if the thermostat is still cycling, the coolant coming back in won't be very cold.
This is the reason why people will put winter fronts on in an effort to stop the cycling. The coolant in the radiator doesn't cool off as much and the cycles happen more often.

wow apparently mine runs hot. unloaded mine will get to 190, and stay there, start hot rodding and it will get to 205-210.
towing my little 5k trailer, it will get 200-210, in town.
EDIT: this appears to be a 12V thread, OOPS

that sounds pretty normal, but my 96 that i just picked up won't go above 140 a ccording to the temp gauge,is the gauge broken, or do i need a thermostat? im probably gonna replace the thermostat just get it out of the way since its probably much cheaper then the sensor.

Using the A/C
If you are using the air conditioner the fan temps will go up about 25 degrees and cause it to lock-up a little earlier. The fan has a thermo-spring in the front to sense temps and it doesn't care what is causing the warmer temp. Your temps sound normal to me.
BTW....how hard was it to upgrade the 5th gear nut mentioned in your signature? I'm just waiting for mine to let me down and was wondering if a little pre-emptive mx would be worth it. sd
