Truck starter

Turned the key and the starter just goes clunk. Seperated the batteries and one showes 12.39 volts and the other showes 12.40, should be enough to roll the beast over. I have over 100,000 miles and live on a dirt road so guess it is time to pull the starter and clean any crud inside up. I did clean the cable connectors on the stater selinoid all ready.
??? Question is what do you call those funky studs and what size socket do I need. they look like a star or torx bit.
Thanks
;D Al

Re:Truck starter

If you are talking about the bolts that hold the starter to the bell housing they are 10mm 12 point.

Re:Truck starter

Would be a good idea to open the starter solenoid and check the contacts. You may have a lot of wear with over 100k miles. New contacts can be puchased at a local auto elect. shop. A clicking sound with no starter turning is one of the main indicators of worn out contacts. Continued use can lead to the solenoid hanging up in the start position and frying wiring and relays.

Re:Truck starter

For solenoid contacts go with LarryB's set - thicker than stock, carry more amperage without heating - plus he advertises on here.
