Transmission Question
Hello everyone. This is my first post but I hope I can get some good advice. I have a 1989 Dodge D250 pickup with the stock TF727 transmission. The tranny is in need of a rebuild, but I have two options. I can buy a professional rebuild video and technical book for a total of 50 dollars, and then buy a performance transmission rebuild kit from PATC for 189 bucks. I've never rebuilt a transmission before, but I am a quick learner, and my uncle who worked as a ford technician for 15+ years told me that I could handle it easily. I also found an entirely rebuilt transmission close to my small town, that was rebuilt by a professional mechanic and he will part from it for one thousand. My uncle thinks that I should rebuild mine, and my father thinks I should buy the freshly rebuilt one. I was wondering if I could get some advice from more experienced people about the path I should take. Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post.

Thank you for the reply, I am glad to have the chance to rebuild this transmission. I have a nice, clean place to rebuild it and I have access to more tools than I could name off in a whole day. Are there any specialty tools that it will require, or anything I need to be concerned about?

Since you don't have overdrive I can't think of anything special.
Quick tip, there are some very good rebuild videos on Youtube on the 727. One that I have watched sounds kind of like an Aussie dude and he goes completely thru it along with showing the air tests he runs to assure good operation.

You will need some type of slide hammer puller to remove the pump. A couple 12" lengths of 3/8 (or 7/16 I forget) course threaded rod and some heavier deep sockets with washers and nuts will work. Also you will need a tool to compress the front clutch snap ring retainer.
