transfer case shifter "ticking"

the ticking i have been describing in all my other threads...changed the LP, changed the OFV...ticking still there.

TRANSFER CASE SHIFTER. it's a nice rattling/ticking sound that is not there in 4x4, but is there in 2wd. if i put some manual pressure forward on the shifter it goes away. what causes this? am i doomed?

I have the same little problem. I find that if you shift into 4x4 then drive around a bit and shift back into 2wd it *may* go away.

I'll have to confirm with my transmission guy (Steve from TPS), but I think that it is a little spring that is rattling in it's home. Steve has a permanent solution, but I think it involves taking the transfer case out and having a mechanical chat with it.

Quick solution: Crank the tunes :0)

To eliminate that annoying Transfer Case Shifter rattle - you need one spring PN 4301631, designed for Mitsubishi 3L engine exhaust flange. (NOTE: this is a Chrysler part number for a Mistu four cylinder exhaust flange bolt spring.)

Insert spring between the shifter and the mounting bracket at the bottom, so that the tensioner spring already on the shifter unit captures the new spring, that is, keeps it in place with the stub ends of the tensioner that stick through the shifter and bracket.

You can also check the locknut on the shifter "ball". Mine came off and rattled against the shifter. It sounded like it was coming from inside the transfercase. You need a small screwdriver to pop the shift pattern cap off the ****.

I did this. It's worked like a charm for over five years.
