that is a better option.
or by a trans pan with the plug already there. i will do this.

The first time I installed a tranny temp gauge used a tee in hot line with both the stock and after market sender. Even though both were in the fluid they weren't in the flow.
Result was both of them read low.

The quick connect fittings on my lines went south a long time ago. I had a machinist make a "manifold" that I could screw the new and old sending unit into. Then, I went to a local auto parts store and had two hydraulic lines made up. The shortest one came out of the trans hot output and hit my manifold. The second one left the manifold and went to the cooler under the exhaust manifold.
In my opinion, you need to monitor the fluid temp coming out of the trans. The fluid will break down when heated above a certain temp and you need to know if your fluid is lubricating or not.
The fluid in the pan has already been cooled and cannot give an accurate temp measurement.
I can watch my gauge and tell if I need to lock the convertor or downshift to keep the fluid cool. When my convertor locks, the temp falls 15* within 30 seconds. Good to know if you have expecatations of keeping your trans alive for any length of time.
Hope that helps,
Ronnie

It working for me.
At some point I'd like to replace it w/ this:

Let us know what your temps are. Mine seem hot so I take it real easy when towing. Cools off real quick after O/D locks up.
