Trans service questions

I have a '97 2500 4x4 with an automatic, and it's time for a trans service. I have a few basic questinos for you...

1) How much fluid should I expect to drain when I pull the pan (I have a Mag-Hitec deep pan)?

2) I don't think I need any RTV on the pan, but I do have a new gasket. Am I correct?

3) Any tips on adjusting the bands?

This will be my first time inside a trans, and I don't have a way to get to the parts store after I open her up.

Thanks,
Tackett

Tackett, as I recall, I think I put in 5 to 7 quarts when I changed mine out. I could be wrong, but that guess is close. I've never used RVT on the pan. I have had problems with the cork gaskets leaking. I always try to use the rubber and have never had a leak problem with them. Adjusting the bands isn't too much of a task, just make sure you have an inch pound torque wrench. There's instructions here on how to do it: Automatic Transmission Band Adjustment

Most tranny gurus recommend you don't adjust the bands unless your 1st and reverse gears are slipping. More often folks get things too tight and cause more problems. It's another one of those don't fix it unless it's broke situations.
