Trans fell apart???

Trans fell apart???
Yesterday I thought Iīd change the filter/fluid on my transmission, as I got the pan off and was about to get the filter I saw the 2nd gear apply lever just hanging there.
After scratching "both ends" so to speak, I looked in the pan, and found the strut (Little flat steelthingy, not suppose to be in the pan).
The questions now are :
1. how do I get that thing back up where it belongs? Do I have to lower the valvebody?
2. I remember about 2 years ago I put it in manual 2nd, and it didnīt shift into 2nd, kept going in first.
But if I put it in drive, I got all the gears, as I understand FSM it uses the same components to go 2nd manual as in 2nd when in "drive".
Thatīs why I thought it was maybe a hair out of adjustment in the linkage, and never gave it any thoughts.
Back to yesterday, I came to the conclusion that there is no way that thing fell out from me loosening the pan, it must have been there for about those two years, and it was driving before, so if I put it back together itīll work again, thatīll buy me some time to figure out what went wrong.
As I was leaving work today, I found a puddle of trannyfluid under my truck, eased it home to my dads barn, and borrowed his truck home.
So, it seems like I going nowhere before I get this mess fixed...if I only knew how to get that thing back up there.
Hope you can help me out.

Thanks patdaly, that's what I was afraid of, but I think it is in the FSM how to get the valvebody out so it's not a "mission impossible".
Then I'll just need to figure out where the leak is...
Gonna look at it tonight when I get home from work.

Valvebody went almost fine, I couldn't get the park thing off, but I managed to get the front band back in place, just to find out that the piston is stuck...
It is suppose to move freely, isn't it?
I put the VB back in there with a couple of bolts, and the pan on with two bolts just to keep the dust and the chickens out.
BTW how much ATF is in these things?
Considering the amount it leaked, and it was still leaking while parked for a day in the barn, I was kinda surprised to see how much came out when I took it apart.

Well, I was going to say perhaps the fluid was being held back, but then I realized you had the VB off........
I'm out of my league here, I would slide over to the first gen section and give a shout out to Angry Johhnie, he has been doing transmission for 30 years....... if he don't know it, we all are in trouble.
