Question Tranny scared me

What else besides temp can cause the OD to kick out? Running down I-75 at 75 mph and the thing went back to drive, glad I bought governer springs or I'd be peeling me off the inside of the windshield now. The TPS has less than 5k miles on it, I don't believe it to be the cause, but it may be time to rewire the silly thing anyway!

Many things can cause the tranny to drop back into 3rd. A broken bulb filament, a brief short, a bundle of wires dangling and causing an open.

On my truck, there was a bundle of wires on othe firewall that needed to be tucked into an alcove.

I had trouble with the temp sensor switch on the tranny line that keeps the tranny out of OD until its warmed up. It would kick down into 3rd sometimes. Changed it and it never gave any more probs.

Take the TPS wires out of the harness and run them in thier own protected harness, try this first as it will not cost you anything and it cures most tps/od problems, take a dental curved pick and get after it, just cut them at the tps and pull approx. 6 to 8 inches at a time all the way to the pcm. Read the thread that is below on rerouting TPS. Goodluck,, Rick

I know that the newer auto in say a 98 truck will kick outta OD if the tranny temp gets to hot. I would have to look in my manual for the exact temp that it drops into drive. I'm not sure if the older trannys do the same.

my dad had a 94 dually diesel with the same problem. it happened to him twice i believe going down the turnpike. the truck just went to third and revved as high as it could. the light came on just like you had just pushed the switch, except hadn't. never really looked into it.
