Tranny problems

Bought a 97 3500 CTD 2wd w/5spd from my nephew for $1500.00 He did the 5th gear fix and the dealer told him to refill with 80/90 and now only 4th gear works. Is it the syncros? Whats the fix?

Wrong oil. The NV4500 needs special lube to not contaminate the syncros. Sounds like its ready for the lid to be pulled and see whats wrong with it. Instead of rebuilding, I just got a remanned unit for $1500 with all the updates to the main shaft/5th gear and replaced it on a weekend.

Need more clear info.
Are you saying 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th don't go anywhere, grind, the shifter is stuck in 4th or just 5th doesn't work?

It only will move in 4th gear, the two gears in the very front, top and bottom are smooth. I will know more after I pull the tranny out.

Yeah, but it would likely cost the same as rebuilding what you've got...
