....Tranny Problem

The other day i went out and fired up my truck, it was cold out around 15 degrees, i let it warm up for a good 20 min. went out put the truck into reverse and started backing out of the driveway, i stopped at the end cuz a car was coming, hit the throttle tuck did not move. put it in neutral and back in reverse still nothing tried drive and nothing also, after that i put the truck into drive and eased on the throttle and nothing again, put it back in neutral took the truck up to 1500rmps and held it for 5 sec's or so, let off and put it into reverse and it went, so i stopped and put it in drive and it went,

anyone know what that could be ? possible need a new filter/flush
full on tranny fluid and dosent smell
burnt or bad

Tranny filter may be stopped up causing loss of pressure. Will generally make a screaming noise if filte is cause.
Torque converter may be drained down. and can't fill in park. Will refill in 10-30 secs in neutral. There is a anti siphon valve in later trucks that might help.
Anotehr possibility is pressure regulator valve sticking in open position. Pressure will go to zero when it happens. Elevated rpm will sometime cause valve to start working.

Have you done anything with your problem? Has it happened again? I am wondering if the TC is draining down and that is your problem. I would follow up with dozer's train of thought. If it happens again, I'd put it into N and give it a few seconds, then shift into R or D.

Yeah my truck still does it but only when the truck is cold or its first start up for the day, otherwise any other time of the day its just fine, shifts fine and everything, I'm not to concerned with it right now, other matters are more important for the time being. But here in a while its getting a new TC and Tranny anyways but I will poke around at it and see what happens when i have the time

Could just be low on fluid.

Check in N hot on level ground. Use the Park brake or wheel chocks.

This TSB might help you.

NO: 21-05-95 Rev. A
SUBJECT: Delayed Transmission Engagement/Torque Converter Drainback
DATE: Jan 5, 1996

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Delayed transmission engagement of 2 to 8 seconds at driveway start up. Most noticeable after the vehicle has been parked for an extended period, typically overnight.

DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System or the Scan Tool (DRB II or III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure Manual, verify that all engine systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference and repair as necessary. If no codes are present and all systems are functioning correctly, check the transmission fluid level following the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual. If the fluid level is correct, perform the repair procedure.

Cummins Diesel Tube & Hose Assy. - Trans Oil Cooler, Pressure

52028469
Quick Connect, 1/2" 3/8 x 18 Thread

2

52028468
Quick Connect, 1/2" 1/4 x 18 Thread

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves installing a transmission oil cooler pressure line with built in drainback check valve for both engine types. The 8.0L V-10 will also receive 2 quick connectors at the cooler lines that connect to the transmission. The Cummins Diesel will receive 4 quick connectors - 2 at the transmission and 2 at the engine mounted cooler.

Using the appropriate Ram Truck Service Manual, locate and identify the transmission oil cooler pressure line (Figure 1 shows a typical transmission cooler hose arrangement).
CAUTION: THE DRAINBACK VALVE IS A ONE-WAY VALVE. AS SUCH, IT MUST BE PROPERLY ORIENTED IN TERMS OF FLOW DIRECTION. IN ADDITION, THE VALVE MUST BE LOCATED IN THE PRESSURE LINE LOCATION ONLY, OTHERWISE FLOW WILL BE BLOCKED CAUSING OVERHEAT AND EVENTUAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE.

Disconnect the pressure line at both ends, discard this line. On the Diesel, this line goes from the transmission to engine compartment cooler. On the V-10, this line goes from the transmission to auxiliary cooler.
8.0L V-10 & Cummins Diesel

Remove the pressure and return line quick connectors from the transmission and discard.
Install the new connectors 1/2" 1/4 x 18 thread (P/N 52028468) into the transmission case.
Insert new pressure tube and hose assembly with drainback valve into the quick connector. Push line inward until lock tabs secure in the line. A snap should be heard as the tabs seat behind the cooler line flange. Install the current return line in the same manner as the pressure line.
Cummins Diesel Only

Disconnect the inlet and outlet lines at the transmission oil to water cooler. Discard the pressure line. Remove the connectors from the cooler and discard.
Install the 1/2" 3/8x18 THD quick connect, P/N 52028469, at the pressure and return ports in the cooler.
Push the new pressure tube and hose assembly and return line inward until lock tabs are secure in the line. A snap should be heard as the tabs seat behind the cooler line flange.
8.0L V-10 & Cummins Diesel

Pull outward on cooler lines at all points to verify they are properly secured.
CAUTION: IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT COOLER LINE SEATING BE CHECKED AS DESCRIBED IN STEP 9. IF THE LINES ARE NOT FULLY SECURED, NORMAL FLUID PRESSURE COULD UNSEAT THE LINES RESULTING IN FLUID LOSS AND TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.

Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.
NOTE: IF ANY TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION CONTAMINATES THE FLUID, THE COOLER AND LINES MUST BE REVERSED FLUSHED THOROUGHLY. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE DRAINBACK CHECK VALVE, THE VALVE MUST BE REMOVED AND DISCARDED BEFORE FLUSHING. REPLACE THE VALVE WITH A NEW ONE AFTER ALL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED.
