Tranny issues

I have a 1996 12V with a 47RE auto transmission. It seems to shift fine...: although when I hit a bump it will come out of od. Also sometimes it will not shift into gear or I have to let off gas to shift. When it does shift it pops back out to the next lowest gear. The tranny itself seems ok when it shifts. However it appears it just will Not lock in. It will be in third then finally hit fourth gear than hit od, than Pop out than go back in. Other times it works flawlessly. Transmiasion was rebuilt 30K ago.:.; only thing I can think of is torque convertor or valve body.

I've been having a similar issue with my od. It locks up then will unlock unless I keep the throttle down hard. I think it is the throttle position sensor. Also check your battery connections and grounds. This didn't start on my truck until I changed my starter contacts and installed a starter diode. One of my battery cables cracked when I reinstalled so I think that has something to do with it. There are several threads on here that help you with TPS and grounding issues. Sounds like your tranny is ok, just an electrical issue. One other thing is the TV cable for your tranny. Look up how to adjust. Good Luck

I just looked up the TV cable and I noticed I pulled on it and there no tension. It just kept pulling. I messed with the button and I felt it but nothing happened. Idk what to do know. Where is the TPS? And the battery terminals are clean.

You will have to do a search on it. I found a thread when I adjusted mine that showed pictures. With the throttle wide open (engine not running of course) and the lever on the trans should be pulled back as far as it can go (or forward depending on how you're looking at it.) With the throttle at idol there should be no slack in the cable. If so the cable might be stretched and needs to be replaced. I'll keep searching and see if I can find that thread I used, it was very helpful and I should have saved it.

Yeah, dealer or ebay. While you're doing it, check your throttle cable. There was a recall on them and they would come unattached from the firewall and fray the cable. Most dealers do not have the throttle cable but ebay has them. Keep us posted.

After doing more research, I've learned there are several issues that can cause the converter to lock and unlock. Mine started locking then quickly unlocking unless I had the throttle down hard or going up hill. It's worse when the od is on. I just changed my starter contacts and added a diode on the starter wire and it started after I did that. I thought it might be battery cables but no luck after cleaning and retightening. So I'm going to change the throttle position sensor next. The brake light switch on your brake pedal and the temp sensor on your transmission can also cause intermittent unlocking as well as the alternator can cause interference or "noise" that will effect it. Start with all the mechanics first and make sure everything is in order then start with the electrical. It can be a long process on the electrical since there are so many variables. Too often people assume their transmission is bad and have it rebuilt but the majority of the time in this case it is something external. Good luck.

While you have your TPS off, make sure you check for slop in the bellcrank assy........ The plastic bushings can wear and cause issues as well. Goerend transmission website used to have a very good Youtube video on how to repair.

I went through all my battery connections and grounds and still locking/unlocking issues. So I broke down and bought a TPS and it's fixed. I did change my throttle cable and all the linkage ends and it really tightened up the shifting and throttle response. I notice it shifts a little sooner instead of running unlocked too long. Sorry to hijack your thread Tmello but hopefully this will help you too.

Don't curse it yet, It will help once you get the shifting under control. I put a new throttle position sensor on mine last week and it's so much better. I would suggest that and the brake switch on the brake peddle. If you notice while driving if you tap the brake the TC unlocks. I know the tps isn't cheap but if it's never been changed it will help. Not only did it fix my lock/ unlock issue but it also mad my shifts faster at lower rpm. My next move is a Goerend billit converter. There is a way you can test your TPS if you don't want to just be a parts changer like me. Just do a search and you can use a simple multi meter to make sure it's putting out proper voltage. Be sure to clean and tighten all battery cables and grounds as well. You'll get it. One other thing to check is the transmission temp senor. They can go haywire as well causing the TC to not lock but it sounds like TPS of brake light switch. Keep us posted.

Thanks I was think TPS also, I checked connection from that Into harness and was clean and clear. I make sure the spring which it attaches to on the throttle body is good and piled up.... My brake light and abs light have been on since ive owned the truck, and I replaced every part of the brake system... How much is the TPS. And is it hard to install.

They are around $120.00 and are very easy to change. 3 small bolts and a plug. Keep in mind if you don't want to spend the money unless you're sure it's the tps, buy a cheap $5.00 multi meter from harbor freight or Home Depot if you don't already have one and test the output of your current TPS.

Buying the TPS Today or tomorrow at Pep boys for $136. Dealer wanted 400. Seemed to have good luck with there parts in past. Should have update in next few days through the weekend with how it goes once it's installed...:
