Tranny fluid change - now shifting probs.

I dropped the tranny pan late Saturday and put a new deep tranny pan on the tranny (not the double deep). Also replaced the filter. The next morning I went out and filled the tranny with about 6.5 quarts of Amsoil. I did not start the vehicle till this morning, Monday. So it has sat for about 36 hours. I left my neighborhood this morning all fine, then I pulled to a stop sign. When I pushed on the throttle the truck just sat their with the rpm's up around 1500. I backed off and then it caught and started moving forward, applied some more throttle and it seemed to go ok. Went to the second stop sign about 500 yards and it worked fine.. pulled into the parking lot, and checked the dipstick.. too high.. drained about 1 quart out. Now it is in the hash area. Drove it to a few other stop signs.. seems to be ok.. Then got it up to highway speeds, about 45-50 the tranny was acting like it was trying to find gears, or locking up with the Torque converter and then locking out. I drove it home after this, the rest of the way seemed to be ok.

So my thoughts are that maybe the fluid takes time to circulate through the entire tranny system. I talked to another guy that knows a little more about cars then me and he seemed to think my problem was that I waited several hours until I filled the truck with fluid. He said that typically as soon as you drain the fluid, put new fluid right back in and start it up to re-circulate it through the system.

Is this what is could be or something else?

Mileage is at 48k
No surprises inside the pan after dropping it
Original tranny fluid was a good red color

What your friend said was my first thought as well, when reading your thread. Should work itself out, if that was the problem. Did you idle long before taking off on Mon Morn? If not ...would have augmented the problem.
Also, you are checking fluid level in 'N' right...after manually working through 1, 2, D, N to fill all the spaces?

Thanks for the reply,

I didn't idle that long this morning,, about 2-3 minutes at max. I'll have to check the fluid level after shifting in the pattern you described. I have only been checking the fluid level in "P" while running.

If you check in P the level will read too high, you might be low now that you've removed some.

MUST check in NEUTRAL! Park will give you an incorrect reading. You are prob. low now. If you warmed up truck in AM in park, you were not circulating the oil, letting it sit in N for a bit idling will let the pump move the oil. Hope all works out.CSH<><

I checked my shop manual when I got home and it said to read the level with it in Nuetral. After doing so I ended up putting about 3 more quarts in.. I want to say their is about 9 quarts total that I think are in their, I will have to count the bottles when I get home, but some where around their.. Anyway.. driving it last night around town seemed to do fine, and on the way to work, it is acting like it used to. It doesn't seem to shift as hard with the amsoil versus whatever was originally in it.

Your problem was probably that you were 2 quarts low on fluid. My truck did that when it had the tranny line leak, and when it got low, it would kick out at stop signs. Also, before i changed my fluid/filter it would do it at like every stop sign i came to because of how clogged the filter was, and it wasnt letting it get enough fluid. Id say youve got it figured out now. Good luck.

Mine did the same thing but the problem was the filter was too loose on it's mount and the tranny couldn't pump fluid from the pan correctly, but since you already fixed it you need not worry about it.
