Tranny was almost 3qts low, did i hurt it?
I just purchased a 96 12v with 89K miles on it. The guy i bought the truck from had replaced the tranny lines with new ones and i assumed that after he changed the lines he topped off the fluid, however i checked it and i guess he did not. I put almost 3qts in while the truck was warm and idling in nuetral. I put close to 200 miles on the truck with it almost 3qts low. I know the trannys hold close to 17qts approx or something like that. Tranny never slipped or acted funny and i did not hotrod the truck at all. I am sure the tranny is fine, but just curious what you guys thought and maybe a little reasurance for my peace of mine, thanks

As long as it didn't slip, shutter, or shift abnormally your ok!! Just so you know, I had a line blow on an outfit while it was idiling in the driveway and didn't know it. I dumped fluid in and the level never came up. I look under the car and fluid was running out. I patched the hose, topped er off, and it shifted/drove just like normal.

hi
well it did not doo it any good for sure as air entering the system can cause problems !
how ever driving it sensably would reduce any damaging effects .
not all bad news , not slipping and firm shifts = good , if it seams to work fine for a 2 week period with normal shifts you may have got lucky and have no real damage that will show up soon .

The oil in my trany kept disapearing,I found the problem, the o-ring on the dipstick tube, when these trucks set, the fluid from the converter will drain out, creating an overfill (check it after it sets a day or 2) it will be higher & can drip.
