ok is my B-day soon and ive decided to get myself some trans work done. I had decided to get a Goerend single disc and a shift kit and have them installed at the same time, and im still thinkin thats what im going to do.
im not going to do any of the work myself and i know that it can very greatly depending on what area and shop, but what can i expect to pay to have a transgo shift kit and the TC installed. ive heard that its around $200-300 to have the shift kit installed is that right ? im short on cash so im just trying to map out the costs. Also do most order their TCs and such strait from Goerend inc. or another site?, i must call to order from Goerend correct?

any input is helpful, thanks

TC requires removal of the trans to install, not gonna be cheap. $2-300 for the Shift kit seems reasonable for a shop to do. I believe you can order a TC direct from goerend, but be aware....any parts YOU order will not be warrantied by an installer, parts that they order for you will have the price marked up a little, but you also should get a warranty on those parts.

You can expect about 300-350 dollars for a R&R and shift kit for labor on a 4WD. However if there are many miles on your transmission at all it is a VERY good idea to pull the tranny pump and have the stator bushing and seals replaced while its out on the bench anyway. That seems to be a weak point on all chrystler transmissions and can cause loss of line pressure and it would suck to take the lockup clutch out of that new tourque converter. Seems like that adds somewhere around another 100 +/- dollars, good insurance IMO.

well my truck has about 91,000 miles on it and was stock when i got it at 88,000 miles and im perty sure that it never toad or hauled heavy, 91,000 miles for a lightly used trans seams to be ok but i dont know. Also ur saying that the shop wont warranty the install of the parts that i didnt buy from them ?


what all is involved in installing a TC, i might beable install the TC and drive to the shop and have them install the shift kit or pull the VB and have the shift kit installed at the shop and reinstall it and the TC myself. im just wary of my skills when it comes to transmissions.

it adds up so fast

of course it would involve dropping the trans undoing bolts and so on but is there more complicated or unseen steps that need to be done that i dont know about when it comes to installing a TC ?

Ya remove the dust cover from the bottom of the bellhousing then remove the converter bolt's. The remove the front and rear driveshafts and remove the tranny cooler lines. And disconnect all the electrical line's and linkage's including but not limited to. the transfer case linkage's and tranny linkage. Then find a transmission jack, sometimes rental stores have them for rent, You will need it because the tranny and transfercase are very heavy. once you have the weight supported the remove the crossmember under the tranny. Undo all the bellhousing bolt's. Then making sure the converter don't fall out and slap ya in the head slide the whole thing back and down. Then you can pull the converter. It just slides out. when you stab the new converter in rotate it as you are gently pushing it in. You will know when it's seated when you can't put your fingers in between the back of the converter and the trans. At this point I like to put a piece of tie wire across the front of the converter so it cant slide out as i install it. Then just reverse the above and it's done. Kinda makes 300.00 for a shop to do it look cheap don't it. But if you have the time and have a little help it's not so bad. Try it.

well i think i might put the TC off for some time and just go with the shift kit for now after looking into the $$$$. trans/TC is still strong and all i have is in my sig + slid my stock plate and afc, it should last . I should spend the money on things that "need" to be done like KDP,timing, and fuel. Heck, ive only had my truck for a year.

its true though, once uv started you cant stop.

well im glad to say im getting both the Goerend single and shift kit.

one more question, what is the best price people have found the (Trans-Go TFOD Diesel shift kit) for, let me know.

Good idea on those mods. Instead of paying $100+ for the shift kit and $300 to have it installed, why not just go with a pre-built valvebody? DTT sells the valvebody for $400, I think Goerend is about the same.

I have thought about doing that, but i believe that it would be more $$ in the end then going with the shift kit. "If" i could find a VB for $400 then i would have to pay for the shipping for it and the shipping back for the core, that aint cheap and still would probly have it installed anyway because my truck would be in the shop to have the TC installed.

true, in the long run it would be a better choice to get the new VB, but the best choice in the long run would be just to get a new built trans but i cant afford either.

I'm in the same boat. I have lots of plans that end up in "some day." Always expect the least, but all I gotta say is... You'll love the new tc and vb! I got my tranny rebuilt with the billet TC and everything about 5500 miles ago and . The drive to work is my incentive to get me out of bed everyday. As long as the rest of your tranny is healthy, those two mods are what's going to make the difference, whether you rebuild it or not. The TC is the weak link in the stock tranny, not to mention, very inefficient.

Book time on the TC is 9 hours for a 4X4.

I lucked out and found a good wrench working from his house, saved me the aggravation of doing it myself.
