If you meant me, I'm on top of it. I have a full four inch down pipe to go with the new turbo. I figured that would almost choke it worse than the stock one if I didn't upgrade the pipe too.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
It seems there is little thought to what is happening. To pull a steep long hill requires lots of power. The faster you go the more power required. And example might be 300 HP to pull at 30 and 500 HP to pull at 50 MPH perhaps. Now the crux. A lot more heat is generated to make the 500 HP. The engine itself can only give up so much heat and then overheat. A cooling system can only transfer so much heat from coolant to the air. Be reasonable about what truck can reasonablly do. Slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Hey John! It's been a while...

No, I'm not going to make it to Moab, too much desert racing going on.

On the elbow thing...I have the 4" down pipe, but I have the exhaust brake in there too. Is that making a restriction?

I know I have a pretty heavy load, but it seems that others are hauling similar weight, and not mentioning any heat up...maybe they're just not mentioning it. This is my first diesel pickup, and just want it to be the best it can be for what I'm using it for without breaking the bank or making it unreliable.

Update time...

I was talking with a friend, and he asked when my truck started running hot with the trailer. Then he said, " I bet it's about the time you put that freakin huge air filter on isn't it?" So I put the ole K&N back on, and immediately felt an improvement just driving around town. It has a lot less smoke and feels more peppy.

This past weekend we went to Barstow for the MORE powder puff race (our girls won their class by a 30 minute margin!!!) Before we left, I put a pair of vice grips on the waste gate hose to see what that would do as well. Pulling the grades, the boost would max out at 34 psi in 4th gear, and I could barely get 1200 degrees on EGT! I never had to grab third gear on the pass, and was probably doing around 45-50 mph over the summit.

Not so much of a believer in the whole BHAF thing. I'm not especially fond of cotton oiled filters either, but they do flow a bunch better.

I haven't checked my mileage yet, but they gauge says I've only used 3/8 of a tank of fuel for the 175 mile round trip.

Do you plan on keeping that turbo? if so dont try to make too much more boost out of it.. the stockturbos can barely handle around 40 psi.

No, I'll adjust the WG linkage or get a adjustable elbow. It seems to be making good power as is now. I think I'll leave it where it is.

Well you have a manifold but even an s300 from pdr ($1,070 right now) would cool you enough for towing but not give your stock head to much boost. Whats the elevation there?? I'm at 4,100 ft at my house and when I tow 15k dump trailer my truck doesn't like it. I am getting a gsk installed tomarrow after I get outta class so hopefully that will help. And a gsk is one thing I do not see on your sig...

Elevation here is around 2500 feet, I'm guessing the pass where I usually pull the trailer is around 4000. From what I understood, the stock turbo and head is good up to 35ish psi, so I wasn't really worried about it. It didn't get to 34psi often, but seems to really like 30psi at around 2100 rpm.

As far as the GSK, I really don't know if it's got one or not, as the previous owner installed most of the performance items. It seems to make power up to 2500rpm. I've never revved it any more than that because it sounds pretty wound out, and I can't bring myself to rev it any higher.

I was told by a local diesel guru that the BHAF flows plenty of air -- just hot air coming straight off the manifold/turbo. So it would make sense if you put the air filter back in a box, sucking cooler air you'd lower your EGT's.

I don't tow that heavy so my BHAF is still in place for just the neato factor
