Torque Convertor can't make up Mind
We will be driving just fine and all of a sudden the torque convertor will shift out of lockup and then it will shift right back into lockup. It does this for a while and then stays in for a while and then starts doing it again. It has been getting worse lately also. However it has never done it while the cruise control is on. Any ideas would be very appreciated. 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel Automatic Tranny 275,000 miles. Just put new tranny in along with Banks Torque Convertor about 20,000 miles ago.
Also I have heard that unhooking the battery for about 15+ minutes with the key in the run position could fix it. Anybody know if that will work or what I can try?

The problem you are experiencing is called hunting.
A tps will run about $160 from an auto parts store. The battery trick only works for 24 valves, the tps on them serves a different function than a 12 valve.
Don't go replacing the tps right away. My stock tps went over 200k even though it started hunting at 20k. Just a liberal dose of aerosol electronic cleaner directed at the shaft while working the throttle back and forth fixed it right up. Doing this again at every oil change prevented it from happening again.
More info here

The tps is the square box in this diagram right below the lever ball (linkage removed in the picture)
The place to spray electronic cleaner is inbetween this lever and the tps.

Hello, I took my TPS off and cleaned it. It had alot of dirt and stuff up in it. I sprayed it with a ton of contact cleaner and then i put dyelectric grease on the wiring connectors. It works just like new.

I personally would take it to a transnission shop. They will give you the best price and certainly know what they're doing. I've had bad luck with Dodge and tps.

Take the wires that run to the tps out of the wire harness from the pcm to the tps and put them in thier own protected harness or rewire it with heavier wires,clean the tps like stated above,check the voltage and adjust if need be, I would do this before spending the moola on a new one, The wires will cause most problems, they can and do pick up interference from other sources. Yamadad;
There is a temp sensor in the tran. coolant line down near the tranny it's job is to keep the trans out of over drive untill fluid reaches 59-60*F I'd be inclined to think that the sensor is bad or you've got a bad connection there at the sensor. You can probably replace that sensor for around $20 or less.
Hope this helps, good luck.
