????Torque converter lock up
#2
As far as I know on '96 the mistery switch will only lock the TC in 3rd with over drive off or 4th with over drive on, at least that's the way mine works. ATS has TripleLok Commander that will lock it up in any gear.

My 95 is the same way, ,stock VB has only 3 or 4 lockup. Pin 54 of the PCM is what you are looking for. For just a lockup function don't cut it, just paralell in a wire switched to a good ground. Do a search on TC lockup or mystery switch, you will find all the info you need.

WHAT VALVE BODY NEEDS ARE REQUIRED TO DO THIS SUCH FUNCTION AND AS FAR AS THE SWITCH GOES YOU JUST SPLICE INTO THE WIRE AND THEN ADD YOUR SWITCH...THANKS TJ MY VALVE BODY HAS ALREADY HAD WORK DONE TO IT SUCH AS DRILLING OUT THE LOCKUP HOLE TO 1/8 INCH..

dieselman24...the switch is easy to do and done correctly u should be able to lockup in all gears but 1st...go to tst's website found in the links section here and check out their power enhancement section and you'll find it...there's also more advanced ways of doing the switches that enable u to lock, unlock, and stock operation modes
i know what ur thinking u think it would give u better performance and all that...but beware....have u ever driven through town lightfooting things and ur 3rd gear lockup occurs under 1500 rpm? and u get a lil shake as it happens?? well thats ur SHUDDER already!! addign a switch to lock things up will accelarate ur clutch wear but having the option there when ur TPS starts acting up is a good idea

Beware, I believe there is a problem with installing a TC lockup switch on the 96 trucks with a certain build date. I installed one on a friend's 96 and the switch worked as described, but it wouldn't unlock when you turned the switch off. I believe I read on either TST's or Piers' sites that the trans. computer has to be reflashed by the dealer in order to make the switch work properly. HTH

How do you identify which 96 trucks need the trans flashed?
I am on board to wiring up the switch in mine, but I would like ot know in advance if Ill have to take it in once the switch is in anyway.

Whatever you do, hook up a lite to it so you do not forget its locked in manualy. Its nice to have it there too, you can see when it locks itself in. these trucks do not like to stop to well when locked in!!

lock out switch
It was pretty simple to hook up my switch, i used an inline splice connector and a micro switch that disengages the lock up as soon as the throttle pedal is released. it locks up in every gear which isn't really a good thing. the truck bogs down in first because of the very low rpm's and in 2nd and 3rd shifts the tranny seems to have trouble finding which gear it should be in. But on the highway it's great! My tranny is screwed up anyways.

The switch that shuts it off when you let go of the pedal??? Thats what the torque converter does in the first place when it does not have a switch! The main purpose of the switch is to keep locked in when you let off the throttle briefly, and get back on the throttle . and its kindof a requirement when running an exhaust brake on a auto! I do not want to sound like a butt, but I think you might want to re-think your hook-up for your lock-up!

On my 96 when I installed the switch it didn't want to shift into OD it would stop at 3rd.
I didn't find it very handy and I'm leaning towards the Commander just to keep from having major problems down the road.

the commander is okay, but the lock-up speed preset is sadly under-designed. Under moderate throttle, by the time it calls for lock-up, 15 more mph have gone by. And if you set it lower to compensate it will hold alot longer upon deceleration and cause a near stall because of the lower speed setting. I helped mine by eliminating the pulse modulation they design into it to soften the lock-up (??). This is easily done by grounding one pin inside the unit, which will knock off a full second of lock-up time and bring your target speed a little closer to reality, but not enough. Also, be careful, after I did this, a lock-up under full throttle will rip the tires loose every time on damp pavement. With a limited slip differential, your tail can be the leading edge in a hurry
Bottom line, for the money they command, I don't believe I would buy another unless they redisigned it. In all fairness to ATS, I think they designed it more for e-brake management, where deceleration speed TC locking is a factor, more than for us speed junkies that want to use them the other way around. All in all, lock-to lock shifting is a general no-no anyway unless you relish the thought of picking clutches and other "hard parts" out of the pan on a regular basis.
So if you're into e-brake TC lock control, they work.....though a radio shack special is a lot more attractive to the wallet, and just as user friendly once you get in the habit of remembering to unlock the darn thing!! If you're into pre-3rd lock-ups and dragging, get a steering wheel mounted switch from a popular performance outfit, and save the jingle for a set of DV's. The Commander will dissapoint you in the 1,2,3,4 mode of operation.
