Torque converter lock/unlock problem.

I have seen while searching on the site that others have problems with this, and that sometimes it can be caused by a weak alternator. I was having the problem quite often, then put my truck on the Battery Tender for a couple days and charged up the batteries, and the problem went away.

On a 96 truck, is it possible that a weak alternator is causing my TC to lock up and let go, and hunt in and out of lockup, or is that only on later models with the electronically controlled trans?

As far as I know the alternator is factory--it was a california truck and I have had it back east here in wv for about 4 years

Probably not a battery issue, could be grounds, battery cable connections, sometimes foil over the Alt wiring will solve it, and yes, on occasion, you do all that and you still find the TPS bad.

That's what fixed mine.......

BTW, your 96 is the first year of the 47RE electronically controlled.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. And, it turned out to be the PCM. But, the tech at the local Chrysler dealership used a jumper wire and connected the lower terminal of the alternator to the top terminal. He said STAR approved that for a fix if the PCM charging controls failed. It works perfectly. Just food for thought!

Really? Did not know that.

TPS is recently replaced and working well, brake light switch is new, too. I guess i could begin with an alternator test.
