timing cover bolts
anybody else out there had any trouble with timing cover bolts backing out? my timing cover bolts seem to keep loosening up & causing some pretty bad oil leaks. I've also noticed a little oil coming from somewhere behind my injector pump, sort of between the pump & block??? any ideas on what might be causing that also????? Thanks for any info

The timing cover bolts loosen all the time. When you retighten them, wash them down with brake cleaner, then give each one a dab of green LocTite after you have retorqued them. This should be done with all the bolts on a Cummins, from the intake all the way to the oil pan bolts.
Pop off the plastic noise cover from the lifter gallery plate. Then tighten the lifter gallery plate. They seem to get loose and then drool oil down the inside of the block on that front corner. It could be the pump is working loose from the gear case, sometimes you can tighten that and stop a leak, and other times you have to pull the pump and install a new mounting O-ring.

RCW, I have a bad oil leak on my bottom end - figured the drain plug was cracked. Replaced drain plug and gasket - torqued to 40 pnds and still a leak. some of the bolst were loose - tightened them and it still leaks. What is the likelhood that the pan gasket is the culprit? Would that be covered by the warranty?

Dusty:
I had the same problem after killing the dowel pin. The leak was between the timing case and the block just below the vacuum pump. It was hard to see. Ended up degreasing and cleaning everything, then found the leak. Had to retorque the timing case bolts (even the ones behind the cam gear), then retorque the timing cover bolts with new locktite, then shot some "Right Stuff" (a black gasket sealant) along the seam. Haven't had a leak since. Clean it off good and then get a good mirror and look from above, you'll find it.

Thanks I'll try & clean it real good in a day or so & try a little lock tight on them, RCW, what do you mean by the noise cover on the lifter gallery plate, not quite sure where you're talking about???
& the oil around the pump seems to be coming more towards the rear, it drips down onto the driver side motor mount a little???? all my other cummins trucks leaked a little oil so I'm not real concerned about a little dampness, but I just don't want to let it get too terribly bad, thanks for the help, Dusty
