go to www.godgeram.org...in the diesel tech section....u need a few tools...gear puller, dial gauge, something to turn bar the engine...a special adapter for the dial indicator....and whatever else i forgot...i think i got it all

Andrew

basically ur gonna be disconnecting the pump from the engine by pulling a gear out and ur gonna turn the engine over slighly like an inch or somehting and put the gear back in....thats in anut shell

15.5 - 16.5 is good on a '95 some folks say even higher is better with the small pump.

So by advancing my timing to 16.5, it will make it run better and knock louder? I like that. haha Does anyone have the special tools, especially the dial indicator with the adapters or whatever on it that I can borrow? I'd appreciate it alot! As far as the other tools, I can make do I think. We have alot of mechanics tools and what not. Anything out of the ordinary to be used? besides the dial indicator?

Just a word of caution!

You guys with 215 pumps already have some advance built in. . . be careful about going past 16 degrees if you have a virgin head gasket/bolts. Especially if you're running quite a bit of boost and/or have the stock injectors, even more so if you've got some miles on it.

Advancing timing is popular, but be aware of the potential drawbacks: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm

if i take it to a local diesel place ..what is the labour code on advancing timing...i mean how many labour hours is it/cost?...2 hours?? cause if im missign almost all the tools i might as well give it to aguy to do for 200$ then spend 300 on all the tools ...get it done to 16 degrees once and for all....what about for my setup with no gsks...will i still benefit from 16? or should i get 14?

MrT with a '95 you should be good to go to 16, especially if you only want to do it once, then you'll be set for bigger injectors.

The gear that adjusts the timing is just on a tapered shaft with no keyway that's why it slips. If it couldn't move you couldn't adjust the timing. That's why it's extemely important that the shaft and gear are spotless before torqueing it down.
You shouldn't have to pay over $200 to have the timing bumped, problem is finding a place to do it. Many places won't do it because it's against smog laws to set anywhere but at the spec on the engine data plate.

Is it at all possible to advance the timing without the expensive tools?

Unfortunately Masseyman, NO. Some have done a "poor man's" method by marking the crank damper, pulling the pump gear, inching the engine back about 1/3" then reinstalling. Not a safe thing to do, goof it up and you have no idea where you're at. Best to get the tool or pay someone to do it.

Hmm, well I kind of like that idea! Whats a 1/3" equal to in the degrees? Do you have the tools that I could borrow Vaughn? OR anyone else?

I've run my '95s from 14 to 20 and like 16.5 the best, any more and starting is harder.
Make sure whoever is doing your timing is using the dial indicator method, otherwise go elsewhere. No matter how much they swear up and down they have a method that works they are basically just guessing where the timing lands.
