Timing

This may already be covered but....
I am thinking about advancing the timing on the ol Cummins.
16-16.5* is what i want, but with 160,000 on her, will this increase in
engine pressure possibly cause some seals or something else to begin leaking?
There is no leaking (relatively speaking, it is a diesel) right now on the truck
Just curious if this is even a possible problem
Thanks
Hoyt

I advanced mine at 240K miles...no problems after 40K more, and lots of towing.

I don't think that without A TON on mods that you could have any problem that wasn't already gonna happen.

Good Luck, and Advance that timing,
Chris

Ya can see my mods on the 97, it was stock until 235,000 miles. The timing really helps.

Hoyt, what injectors do you have? That will play into the equation. You don't want to advance more than 0.5* to 1.0* beyond stock with stock injectors. With 300s or 370s then yes maybe up to 16.5-17* on a stock head & gasket since you don't have a 215 pump.

Your miles aren't an issue, mine is OK at 372,000. Vaughn

19* on 300's......no problems that I know of, but I DO have the little pump. starts and runs at 0* like it does at 35*......but not quite like it does at 60*

Just did my dad's stocker '95 to 16.5 and he's all smiles. Just after we timed it I took my brother wife for a ride in mine, and I broke a shaft. He towed me back home and said he saw quite a bit more responsiveness and less pedal than before under a load. He too has the little pump though.

i have mine at a little bit more than 16 on my 97, i did my wifes to 17. both 215 pump trucks, mine has 370's and her is stock other than a#10 plate. it made a big differance on her truck when i bumped the timing, not as much of a differance on mine. i plan to bump mine to 17 or a bit more also to see how mine likes it. and you can get a idea on the miles in the sig.

timing

Hoyt,

The timing should work,OK. If you worry, you can replace your studs one at a time to better seal the head.

I'm moving mine to 17 in a couple of weeks Let the good hot times roll!!!!

Will advancing my timing to 16.5* help lower EGT's any? If so how much?
