How can you install it incorrectly???
By placing them, the lift pump and fuel heater, back in the incorrect order.I have seen it done, its not easy but can be done.By retorquing I mean torque the hold down bolts to the proper torque specs and not over torque them or under torque them.
I wonder how they determined it was piston slap without dropping the pan or pulling the head off.........Andy

i am really thinking OFV. how hard are these to do?
my ticking didn't start until my LP started to go bad. now it won't go away. no start-up issues anymore, too.

Stuff a rag inbetween the block and injection pump to keep the washers from disappearing.
If the valve hits the manifold don't bend the return line to make it clear, you'll have a heck of a time to get it to line up again. Rather enlarge the notch in the manifold with a grinder or file.

I also have a ticking it started 2 months ago and I can only hear it at idle but it is loud. I have been all over and under the motor and transmission and exhaust system with a stethoscope and found the ticking is at the lift pump it seems to get louder as the truck warms up. The truck normally starts instantly but now once in a while I have to crank it a little longer, once running all seems to be normal other than that ticking. Any information on what might be going on with the lift pump and what the cure is will be greatly appreciated. Dave (stock 1997 Ram 2500 club cab 4x4 148,000mi)

5 minute one wrench job if you don't drop the sealing washer(s) or the valve doesn't hit the manifold on it's way out.

and i revved it in park tonight...no noise. is this a symptom of OFV?

Mine ticks rapidly but only briefly when boost jumps up to around 28-30 if it gets there quick. If it comes up steady, it doesn't tick. It will hold at 35 under load, but only briefly. Of course, I havent heard it in a long time since diesel got so high. I try to go easy on it now. I always attributed it to the wastegate activating as the boost opens and closes it rapidly. I did this manually with air pressure and it sounded the same so I just let it go. It has a metallic ring to it, from the passenger side that is not dampened like it would be if it was from inside the engine. I did have the lift pump tick and OFV tick. Both went away when I replaced them. I also replaced the prefilter screen.

i had i ticking at highway speeds under load as well. i had a blown head gasket due to a broken head bolt, so i fixed that and put new valve seals, etc. in. while the valves were out, i noticed that they were pitted, so i hand-lapped them. reassembled the thing, and no tick tick tick. i think it was probably due to the pitting on the valves, but its hard to tell because i changed so much stuff at once.

Mine also ticks. Mostly after it's warm, and I usually only hear it at idle.
Seems to come from the drivers side of the motor.
I read on TDR that it is the fuel pump actuating lever or some such.
I cannot remember what they said, and the post is so old it isnt there anymore.
They basically said to get a spare pump and carry it with you.
Could be months, could be years before it goes.
Not sure if this is good info or not...

i was having great starts, until this morning. this morning and afternoon it took a while.
the ticking is only at 50%-100% throttle, only while driving (while parked no noise). i REALLY want to start playing with this truck, but can't until this tick crap is gone.
OFV- is the part number 3963593? and price around $152? any different part numbers for the 35PSI vs 22PSI?

Change that overflow valve if your truck has any kind of mileage on it. $45 or so if I remember right.
You'll have better cold and low fuel in tank starts as well as more power.
If the spring in the lift pump gets weak, the plunger will "float" on the cam lobe at certain RPM's causing a tick.

what year trucks are those with the ticking pumps?
my bro put an older style 2nd gen fuel filter base & filter on the 98 the metal style, (not the paper style)
pump ticks less, i have less fuel restriction went from 12 psi wot to 25 psi at Wot.
