Does the guage move at all? When the tstat sticks open it should come up to some temperature at least, usually about 1/2 way to 180*. If it does not move at all then the sending unit is probably dead. It is not fun thing to change out either, it is on the drivers side on the back of the head and it takes a 1 1/16" socket.

The wire to the sensor comes off easily especially if you have been replacing the the fuel hoses.

Id be interested to hear any updates as Ive recently been seeing issues with my temp gauge.
For me, the temp guage moves up and down quickly.
Too quick to be the T-Stat opening and closing, more like the wire is not making a good contact.
While driving, the gauge will never reach 190, but it never falls below ~160, it bounces around between the two.
Im guessing Im loosing a sending unit or the wire has come lose somewhere.

Be intersted to hear what fixes your issue.

I have ridden in several 98 12valves. And all I know that specific year has problems with the temp gauge..... but the trucks temp is fine!

I know that my temp is fine. The thing with mine is that it started working again and I know it just didn't fix itself so I went and got my sensor today. DieselDaze, my don't move around quickly,it just goes alittle past 140 and stops. The Service guy told me that sometimes they will go back and forth like the Oil Pressure Sensor does I will keep you all updated.
